history

The dung 1866

Archaeological excavations have shown that in the Middle Bronze Age (approx. 1800–1200 BC) there was already a settlement at this point, the so-called Eikendonk. There and near the Eikendonk there were also older archaeological finds: a flint ax from around 3000 BC. And an ax of the Michelsberg culture (4400-3500 BC), a settlement from the time of these materials has not yet been found, but various traces of settlement from more recent times such as the Iron Age (700 BC) and around the beginning of our era.

The "modern" settlement history of Den Dungens begins - as far as is known - in the 14th century. In a Brussels land register, the Bailiwick of the Duke of Brabant mentions a place called "Dunghen" for the first time in 1340, and this land register also mentions the existence of a dike. The struggle of the residents against the water has continued up to the present, with floods occurring again and again. A great step forward was achieved with the construction of a new dike in 1649.

The predominantly Catholic population of Den Dungens came under the Protestant rule of Friedrich Heinrich von Orange in 1629 . The Catholic Church passed into the hands of the Dutch Reformed Church. Since Napoleon's reign in 1807, Catholics have been able to practice their faith again.

population

Since 1810 Den Dungen was an independent municipality, attempts to merge St. Michielsgestel with Den Dungen failed. Until the 20th century, Den Dungen was predominantly agricultural. The share of the working population in agriculture was: 1930 62.5%, 1947 49.1%, 1960 27.9%, 1986 11.2%. The proportion continued to decline. Due to the adjacent agricultural land, Den Dungen still has the character of a farming village.

The population of Den Dungens was 400 to 600 people around 1400, around 700 around 1600, 1270 in 1815, 1347 in 1900, 2084 in 1935, and 3266 in 1965. On January 1, 1996 the municipality Den Dungen was dissolved and came together with Maaskantje to the municipality St. Michielsgestel. On January 1, 2005 Den Dungen and Maaskantje had a combined population of 6040. In 2018 the population was 6275 people.
