Location and economy

location

The place lies between 's-Hertogenbosch and the 10 km south of Eindhoven and belongs to the rural area of the Meierij van' s-Hertogenbosch. About four kilometers to the east, in the neighboring town of Veghel , is an exit from the A50 motorway (Eindhoven – Herzogenbusch– Arnheim ).

hop

In the 18th century, Schijndel was known for growing hops . At that time Schijndel had seven breweries . In 2004 there was a feasibility study for the reintroduction of hops. In 2005 a trial field was set up, and the cultivation proved to be economical. Some of the hops have been used by the small local brewery Sint Servattumus since 2006 . Spelled beer has also been brewed there since 2007 .

Business

Major local industries:

  • Bolsius company, a candle factory in operation since 1871. There is also a lot of small businesses and agriculture.

history

In 1299 the place was first mentioned as Skinle , the name should mean "bark forest" (compare English skin = skin). There was a forest there in the Middle Ages where the bark of felled trees was harvested for tanneries . The Eighty Years War (1568–1648) brought much misery and poverty to the area. After that, the people's Catholic faith was suppressed: North Brabant was a "generational country" of the Republic of the United Netherlands , where Calvinism was the state religion. In the 18th century people found a meager livelihood with cattle farming and the manufacture of wooden shoes . An improvement only occurred in the late 19th century when the place temporarily had a train station from 1873. There were many tanneries back then . Jansen de Wit, a stocking factory, was founded in 1915, closed in 1981 and demolished in 1986. The plant was best known for its two striking tall chimneys. On January 1, 2017, Schijndel merged with the municipalities of Veghel and Sint-Oedenrode to form the new municipality of Meierijstad.

Trivia

The patron saint of Schijndel is Saint Servatius , who is also shown in the right half of the municipal coat of arms.

Regional artists, including amateurs, decorated the village with around 80 statues and sculptures in the 20th century.

In the movie New Kids Turbo from 2010, the city is hit by a huge bomb that was originally intended to destroy the neighboring town of Maaskantje . In the follow-up New Kids Nitro , a bitter fight rages between a group of young men and a woman from Schijndel and a group of young men from Maaskantje. This also brought Schijndel into the field of vision of New Kids fans, who had so far almost exclusively traveled to Maaskantje to visit locations in the series and the films.
