Paul Roger Elstak (born January 14, 1966 in The Hague ) is a Dutch hardcore techno musician and DJ of Indonesian descent. His father is the jazz musician and composer Nedly Elstak .
Act
Paul Elstak is one of the most formative characters in the hardcore techno scene. He often has the reputation of being the inventor of hardcore techno, as he played a major role in popularizing this style - also known as gabber in relation to Dutch productions - in the early days . He achieved this in particular through his label Rotterdam Records , which he founded in 1992, and the act Euromasters, which he had under contract . However, it was Marc Acardipane from Frankfurt who released “We Have Arrived” as Mescalinum United, the first recognized track of this genre on the Planet Core Productions label in 1990 .
Paul Elstak not only produced the gabber typical of his home country, but also softer, more cheerful happy hardcore and dance . He even landed in the European charts with a few such tracks, such as his commercial success-oriented cover versions of “Love You More” ( Sunscreem ) and “Rainbow In The Sky” or the title “Promised Land”. This meant that Elstak was even represented in the German Bravo at that time . This was a clear break with the originally heavily underground scene and seemed like a personal sell-out, which was resented by many gabbers at the time. After a while, however, he was able to rehabilitate his reputation in the scene through the subsequent gabber productions.
In 1997, when Elstak no longer concentrated on happy hardcore and dance, he and the punk band Teenage Warning dedicated the American Stephen Donaldson (alias Donny the Punk ), who died in 1996, and the Dutch musician Peter Slaghuis (alias Hithouse , who died in 1991) Holy Noise with Paul Elstak and Rob Fabrie active), the release "Brohymn", which is a cover of the song "Bro Hymn" by the punk band Pennywise .
Many of Elstak's titles can be found in the episodes of the Dutch comedy series New Kids , as they fit the style of the characters. The consequence of this was that Elstak wrote the title song and parts of the soundtrack for the movie New Kids - Turbo, which was released in December 2010, and had a cameo appearance in the same film and in its successor New Kids Nitro .
Paul Elstak published his happy hardcore records under his real name for many years, while he used pseudonyms for his gabber tracks, the most common being DJ Paul . After founding his label Offensive Records , however, he said goodbye to this practice and again released gabber tracks under his full name.
