Panningen , popularly known as Kepèl (after the chapel built in 1643 ), is the largest village in the Dutch municipality of Peel with around 6,800 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2018) . Since January 1, 2010, Panningen has been part of the municipality of Peel as the core of the former municipality of Helden .

geography

Panningen is centrally located between the cities of Roermond , Weert and Venlo in the province of Limburg .
Places in the area are Beringe , Koningslust , Helden and Egchel .

history

Panningen emerged in the 17th century as a settlement around a pilgrimage chapel . In 1830 the place became an independent municipality. In 1929 the Seven Sorrows of Our Lady Church was built and the chapel was demolished in 1931.

Economic history

The brick industry was an important line of business . The stone factory Engels Helden , on the Steenstraat, and the Heldenschen stone factory Vostermans', on the Ruijsstraat, are witnesses of this. On the Steenovenstraat you will find the ring oven from 1909, which is classified as a " Rijksmonument ". There is now a large regional industrial park north of the village of Kessel . It is 65 hectares and is still being expanded.

Attractions

  • The-Seven-Sorrows-Our-Lady-Church from 1929–1930
  • The Mission House , Kerkstraat 8
  • The tomb of Guillon-Engels , on the grave site, made by the sculptor Henri Leeuw sr.
  • The cemetery chapel from 1865, originally the burial chapel of the pastor WF de Roij
  • The St. Odilia Chapel , near Beekstraat 65, from 1864, restored in 1984

nature and landscape

Panningen has a rapidly growing urban area, so that it is now structurally adjacent to Helden and Egchel in the east and south. It is located on open sand and has a height of about 33 meters. The open area is used for agriculture, in the south-west (Egcheler Heide) there is a large-scale mining area that slopes down towards the Meijel drainage canal towards the Maas.

Business

The village fulfills an important regional function, as the surrounding cities are each about 20 km away. Characteristic for Panningen is a relatively large retail trade, which was expanded between 2000 and 2007. Worth mentioning is the town hall square , which was rebuilt in the 1960s with the town hall and modern houses for the shops. The town hall was torn down and the characteristic tower was gradually replaced by The Pit , a covered shopping arcade . The town hall was moved to the place where the Marienschule once stood. The community (or CC In Kepèl ), which is commonly known as the cultural center of the square, has been expanded into a multifunctional center called DOK6 , with theaters and cinemas and a trendy bar. The programming for this is also done by the Heldener Kulturstiftung C6 . Next to DOK6 there is another covered shopping arcade above; De Parel ("The Pearl") . The construction of the two shopping centers was completed in 2007.

dialect

In Panningen they speak Heldens , a Limburg dialect that is part of the East Limburg subgroup . The language border Panninger Line is named after the place, which leads past to the west and north.

carnival

As in the whole of the south of the Netherlands, carnival is also celebrated in Panningen . This festival is organized on site by the De Kuus oeht Kepèl association . De Kuus oeht Kepèl regards 1952 as the founding year. This enables the community's first association. The Kuuser Carnival Association was founded that year with Egchel and Beringe Kepel . The path of the new club was more difficult than expected. Differences of opinion and changing leadership gave the club a different face. After a few years this led to a split and Kepel , Beringe and Egchel founded their own association.
