Theodorus Wilhelmus Maassen (born December 8, 1966 in Oegstgeest ) is a Dutch cabaret artist and actor from Eindhoven .

Life

Maassen had his first major successes in 1990 when his stand-up comedy won first prize at the Cameretten , the oldest cabaret festival in the Netherlands, in addition to the Groningen Student Cabaret Festival . In the following years it gained popularity, especially among the student audience. He is known for dealing with political and social issues as a critical cabaret artist.

From 2000 onwards, he became popular across the country through television. For one, his stage programs were recorded and broadcast on television. On the other hand, Maassen also worked in Dutch television series and started an acting career in addition to being a cabaret artist. A number of series and film roles followed, including leading roles e.g. B. in the 2002 film comedy The mysterious Minusch, which was also released in Germany .

The Dutchman made a sensational appearance in a panel discussion in 2001 when he pulled a copy of the UEFA Cup out of a pocket on the subject of football memorabilia . The year before, he himself had stolen the trophy that PSV Eindhoven had won in 1978 while filming in the PSV stadium.

In 2004, the cabaret artist recorded a version of the rap song Doodsbedreiging (threat of death). The song was originally written by three Hague rappers who were convicted of the death threat it contained against the politician Ayaan Hirsi Ali . Maassen turned it into a protest song for the right to freedom of expression, which even hit the Dutch charts.

His cabaret program Tegen beter weten in (“Against better knowledge”), his fifth solo program, made 2006 the most successful of his career to date. He was awarded three renowned cabaret prizes this year: the Kring van Nederlandse Theatercritici Critics' Prize , the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds Theater Prijs and the Poelfinario for the best cabaret program of the year.

With the title Lauwe pis he had a typical carnival hit with the group De Kapotte Kontjes in early 2007 , which was even number 1 in the Dutch single charts for two weeks. In the song, the text of which Maassen first recited in Tegen beter weten in , he ironically ironized, among other things, the world politics of the USA, Islamist terror and Chinese food, combined with descriptions of his sexual behavior in the carnival. Lauwe pis refers to the refrain - Ze maken mij de pis niet lauw - and literally means "Lau (warm) e piss", but is used in this context in a figurative sense. The meanings of the chorus range from “you don't scare me” to “you don't make me crazy”.
