occupation

Bros Before Hos is a 2013 Dutch romantic comedy . The film was produced by Eyeworks . Directed by Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil , who also wrote the script.

action

Two adoptive brothers, video store worker Max and assistant manager at a supermarket Jules, swore in childhood, after urgent fatherly advice, never to have a relationship with a woman. The two of them go to parties together and are always in bed with another woman who is dumped again within a very short time. Jules often has sex with female subordinates in the supermarket warehouse.

This changes when Anna appears in the video store and Max falls in love with her. Anna works in a psychiatric hospital, one of which is Jordy, who becomes restless and violent when he cannot watch porn movies . One day later, Max discovered that his brother Jules had slept with Anna. Although Anna was a typical one-night stand for him at first , they meet more and more often until the two even want to move in together.

Jules changes his plans: Moving in together is not for him, and he allows Max a relationship with Anna. But Max gave Jordy porn DVDs after his boss died and the video library closed. Anna is blamed for it and is fired for it. After Jules and Max were imprisoned for a short time, after they were arrested by the police after an illegal hike with the disabled, everything will be fine between Max and Anna.

In between there is a storyline about René, Max 'and Jules' friend, whose wife Suzanne ends the relationship. In the end, this couple also experiences a happy ending.

background

The film was shot in Haarlem , Amsterdam , Uitgeest , Amersfoort , Weesp and Groningen , among others .

The film premiered in the Netherlands and Belgium on December 5, 2013. The film was released on DVD and Blu-ray on April 8, 2014. In Germany , the film was only shown in cinemas for two days, on January 15 and 16, 2015. The German version was released on DVD and Blu-ray on February 12, 2015.

The title of the film refers to the English expression bros before hoes , which means that “brothers” - male friends - should be given a higher priority than “sluts” - female persons with whom one has or would like to have a relationship.

The scene in which Max orders pornographic films by telephone was taken from the US film Clerks - Die Ladenhüter (1994). When Max visits his father, a fictional quiz show with Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil is on TV . The events at the facility for the mentally handicapped were taken from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975). In the credits, scenes from the films Pulp Fiction , Jaws , Menace II Society , Rocky , Braveheart , Fight Club , New Kids Turbo and American History X are replayed.

In the Netherlands, the film has been recommended for ages 12 and over. In Germany, the film has been approved by the FSK from the age of 16. The German justification for release states: “The film combines motifs from the“ Coming of Age ”with a romantic story and shows strong exaggerations in the representation of its characters. In particular, the often crude, sometimes sexist and racist language, the depiction of drug consumption and individual explicitly sexual depictions can irritate children and young people under the age of 16. Due to their media and life experience, 16-year-olds are able to understand these aspects as ironically exaggerated characterizations of the film characters and to evaluate them critically, especially since the protagonists develop more maturity and tolerance in the course of the action. The theme song Bros Before Hos was sung by The Flexican and Sef and was released on November 26, 2013.

criticism

Thomas Vorwerk von Filmstarts describes the film as a “'satirical' on romantic comedies”. The film "is not particularly accurate" and its humor "turns out to be more than ever a question of taste". He comes to the conclusion that “the collision between a politically incorrect anarcho joke and one of the most conservative film genres does not automatically result in a 'screamer' at all”.
