List of draws in the National Football League since 1974

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of draws in the National Football League since 1974 tops all 25 draws in the regular season of the American football league National Football League (NFL) since overtime was introduced for the 1974 season . With 0 to 2 draws per season, less than 1% of all regular season games ended in a draw.

history

In the early days of the NFL, regular season games always ended after the end of the fourth quarter. Because of this, there were many draws, most of them in the 1920 season , in which 17 games ended without a winner. Since a tie is a largely undesirable outcome in sport in the United States - the NFL is currently the only league of the Big Four (NFL, MLB , NBA and NHL ) in which a tie is possible in a regular game - the NFL modified in 1974 their rules to the effect that if there is a tie at the end of regular time, another quarter is played. The main reason for the change, however, is the founding of the competitive league World Football League (WFL). In order to slow this down, the NFL took over a large part of the rule changes of the WFL. This was intended to prevent the abandonment of the monopoly position after the establishment of the American Football League (AFL), with which the NFL merged in 1970. Among these rule changes, in addition to moving the goals to the end of the end zone, the introduction of overtime in the regular season was also included.

The overtime system stipulated that the first team to score points during this time would end the game ( sudden death ) and win. If neither team succeeds, a game continues to end in a draw. This rule has been criticized repeatedly as this scheme the team which the coin toss ( coin toss wins) at the start of overtime and thus usually was the first the ball, gives a great advantage. The next rule change therefore followed in 2012. Since then, a field goal in the first drive of overtime does not end the game, but every other point win continues. If a field goal is scored in the first drive, the team that has not yet had the ball also has the chance to equalize with a field goal or win with a touchdown. If there is an equalization, the same rules apply as before 2012: every further point win ends the game and when the time runs out the game ends in a draw. Since 2017, the overtime is no longer 15 minutes, but only lasts 10 minutes.
