Moritz Wilhelm Böhringer (born October 16, 1993 in Stuttgart ) is a German American football player on the tight end position . He played for the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns in the German Football League (GFL) in 2015 , before he was selected in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings . Most recently he was under contract with the Cincinnati Bengals .

Career

Beginnings

Böhringer initially played soccer at DJK Aalen and TSG Hofherrnweiler. In 2011, Böhringer started playing football in the youth of the Crailsheim Titans and played in the senior division team in 2013 and 2014 for the adults.

GFL

Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns

In 2015 he moved to the neighboring Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns , who play as two-time German champions in the German Football League (GFL), the highest German football league. In June the Unicorns lost in the Eurobowl XXIX 21:14 in Braunschweig against the New York Lions . After first place in the GFL Süd, the season ended with another final defeat in the German Bowl XXXVII against the Lions. In his first (“rookie”) season, the mechanical engineering student Böhringer scored 59 passes for 1,232 yards of space and 13 touchdowns in 16 GFL games (adjusted for penalties) and was one of five GFL players for the 2015 player of the year nominated.

NFL

NFL Draft 2016

Talent scouts of the National Football League soon became aware of Böhringer. Due to his age, the student Böhringer would theoretically still be eligible to play for college football . While NFL teams can contract older athletes directly (as a free agent ), they must stick to agreements with young athletes and students and can only acquire negotiating rights to them through or after the NFL draft .

At the NFL Combine , which takes place every February in Indianapolis actor training for selected talents, Boehringer did not participate. An appointment was made for a “ Pro Day ”, a show training that universities hold for their potentially professional athletes. On March 31, 2016, the 1.93 m tall and over 100 kg passport recipient took part in Florida Atlantic University's Pro Day . Since he was still largely unknown in the USA at that time, his strong performance with a combination of size, strength, speed and catch security caused a lot of media coverage. NFL.com reported on him as an "NFL Draft Party Crasher". His potential was rated by the NFL, despite only one year of match practice in the highest German league, with a grade of 5.41, which corresponds roughly to a reserve player or possible regular player in the NFL.

On April 30, 2016 Moritz Böhringer was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL Draft as the 180th player . He became the first player to be drafted directly from Europe into the NFL without having attended college. At the same time, he is the first German in what is known as an “offensive skill position” in the NFL, that is, an offensive position that gets to the ball during normal play, in contrast to offensive linemen , who are usually not allowed to do so Touching forward passes.

Minnesota Vikings

Moritz Böhringer signed his contract on May 2nd as the first NFL rookie after the 2016 NFL Draft.

On May 11, 2016, the NFL allowed Böhringer to use an umlaut on his jersey . He was released on September 3, 2016, before joining the Practice Squad a day later. Moritz Böhringer was released from the Minnesota Vikings on September 1, 2017.

Cincinnati Bengals

On September 18, 2017, he completed a trial training session with the Cincinnati Bengals to secure a place in the Bengals Practice Squad . On May 1st, 2018 he was signed to the Bengals as part of the “ International Pathway Program ”.

On September 1, 2018, he was released from the Cincinnati Bengals to be accepted into the Practice Squad the next day. In the preparation for the season in August 2019, Böhringer played against Kansas City, but again failed to make it into the squad of 53 eligible players. He was then reassigned to the Practice Squad. He was released by the Bengals in August 2020.
