The French appointed Bishop Jean-Pierre Camus died before he took office. On July 31, 1662, Jonnart was appointed Bishop of Saint-Omer . He finally received his episcopal ordination on October 8, 1662. A few years later he was chosen to succeed the late Gaspard Nemius . On July 15, 1669, he was appointed Prince Archbishop of Cambrai and, consequently, regent of the Cambrai Monastery with the rank of duke .
