Jacques-Théodore de Bryas (also Brias or Comte de Bryas ; born November 19, 1631 in Mariembourg ; † * November 16 or November 17, 1694 in Cambrai ) was a Roman Catholic bishop.

His father was Charles, Comte de Bryas, Sieur de Hernicourt, Baron de Morialmé and Marquis de Molinghem and in command of the Mariembourg fortress († 1655). His grandfather was the councilor and commander of the Spanish King Jacques III de Bryas. His great-grandfather was Jacques de Bryas (* 1512) a well-deserved military man. He was governor of Renty , of Mariembourg of Bapeaumes and Namur and a member of the council of war of the King of Spain.

Life

Brays was sent to Douai University early on . There he received a licentiate in law . He became a canon in Tournai and was ordained a priest on March 2, 1664 . On December 12, 1666 he became a member of the Great Council of Mechelen . There he held the position of maître des requêtes .

On February 8, 1672, Bryas was appointed Bishop of Saint-Omer . His episcopal ordination took place on May 29, 1672. After he had already succeeded Bishop Ladislas Jonnart in Saint-Omer , he was appointed as his successor as Prince Archbishop of Cambrai and regent of the Monastery of Cambrai with the rank of duke on June 17, 1675 . However, he was only able to take his bishop's seat on October 28, 1676.

During his tenure as Prince Archbishop, the French Sun King Louis XIV took Cambrai. The bishop, however, was in the favor of the king, who among other things valued his exemplary behavior and charity.

He was buried in a splendid tomb in Cambrai Cathedral.
