The junior teacher Melanie Pröschle from the Swabian province starts her first position at a Karlsruhe secondary school after completing her legal clerkship . She moves to the new city full of zest for action and wants to bring a "breath of fresh air" to her new job. After she had just separated from her childhood sweetheart, she also tries to build up a new circle of friends, including her neighbor Tina, a boutique owner. Again and again Melanie makes a mistake. She cannot assert herself in front of her students and Tina also withdraws from her. So she is increasingly isolated and desperate.

Maren Ade, who comes from Karlsruhe, completed her studies at the University of Television and Film (HFF) in Munich with The Forest for the Trees . It is her first feature film. The Südwestrundfunk co-produced the film as part of its youth development program Debut in Third . The shooting took place from June 3 to July 9, 2003 in Karlsruhe and the surrounding area. The film impresses with the captivatingly realistic play of the main actress Eva Löbau, which gives the film a documentary character in places.

The premiere was on October 23, 2003 at the Hof International Film Festival , the German theatrical release on January 27, 2005.

Awards

The film was nominated for numerous prizes, such as the German Film Prize 2005 in the “Best Feature Film” category. He won the following awards:
