Sandora Lavett Irvin (born February 23, 1982 in Fort Lauderdale , Florida , United States ) is a former professional basketball player. She last played in 2011 for the Atlanta Dream in the Women's National Basketball Association .

Career

college

Sandora Irvin played for the Lady Frogs, the women's basketball team at Texas Christian University , until 2005 . Irvin was best known in college for her blocks. In her final season for the Lady Frogs, she blocked 150 attempts to throw, just 2 blocks away from the NCAA block record in one season. During her time at college, Irvin blocked a total of 480 attempts to throw, improving the previous block record of 428. Her defensive strength made her the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year in 2003, 2004 and 2005. In 2005 she was also voted Conference USA Player of the Year.

Women's National Basketball Association

Sandora Irvin was selected third in the 2005 WNBA Draft by the Phoenix Mercury . In the 2005 season she played twelve times for the Mercury. She averaged 3.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, 0.5 blocks and 0.42 steals per game. In the 2006 season, she only played 7 games for the Mercury. After two subpar seasons, she was transferred to the San Antonio Silver Stars for a second-round pick in the 2008 WNBA Draft . In the 2007 season she was on the field 23 times for the Silver Stars. Irvin got an average playing time of 5.6 minutes per game this season, only 0.2 minutes more than in the previous season. Even in her second season in San Antonio, she did not get beyond the role of a supplementary player. After she was not active in the WNBA in the 2009 season , she moved to the 2010 season for the Atlanta Dream team . There she received her first assignment in the starting line-up of a WNBA team and her playing times also increased, but she still only played the role of a supplementary player. Even in her last WNBA season in 2011 with the Atlanta Dream team, her role did not change.

Europe

In addition to her assignments in the WNBA, Sandora Irvin was also active in Europe for the Polish team Lotos Gdynia .
