Ondřej Starosta (born May 28, 1979 in Prague ) is a Czech basketball player . As a young player, Starosta was accepted into the reserve team of the European top club Real Madrid in 2000 and was allowed to try his hand at the pre-season preparation for the NBA club Cleveland Cavaliers in 2006 . Ultimately, however, the whole big breakthrough was denied him. After trying to gain a foothold in the NBA, he played for clubs in the Spanish second division LEB Oro . In the 2012/13 season he was named “ Most Valuable Player ” (MVP) of the season.

Career

Until 2000, Starosta played in his hometown of Prague for the two local clubs Sparta Prague and USK, which, as Slavia Prague, was one of the country's leading teams in the past. Starosta at Sparta Prague in the Czechoslovak Championship 1st League in the 1998/1999 season gave 43 points (in 22 games) and in the 1999/2000 season gave 186 points (in 34 games).

Then he got a contract with the European top club Real Madrid, which let him play in his reserve team in the fourth division. After a year he moved to Belgium to the RBC from Pepinster . In the 2002/03 season Starosta then played in the French LNB Pro A for MSB from Le Mans . The team was eliminated as third in the main round in the play-offs for the championship in the semi-final series against defending champions ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne . Starosta, who had an average of twelve minutes per game at Le Mans, then went one league lower and played Pro B in the second division for the club from Saint-Quentin . After one season he moved to Châlons-en-Champagne to the previous league competitor and promoted to the Pro A. In the 2004/05 season he missed in the Pro A with an average of 12 points and 9.4 rebounds in 28 minutes of use per game Double-double only barely and had the best field throw rate of all players with almost 65%. Nevertheless, the climber ended up on the penultimate place in the table and only rose again because of the poorer direct comparison with Chorale Roanne Basket , who became French champions two years later. With his individually good performance, he had recommended himself for the previous league competitor Illkirch-Graffenstaden Basket from Strasbourg . As French champions, Strasbourg IG also played in the highest European club competition ULEB Euroleague 2005/06 , but in the group stage of the preliminary round they only achieved three wins in 14 games. Defending champion Strasbourg IG came third in the main round in the play-offs for the French championship, where they were defeated in the semi-final series runner-up SLUC Nancy Basket . Although Starosta's average operating time was halved compared to the previous season and thus his personal gain in points and rebounds in the same way, he got a contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers in their expanded squad in the highest endowed professional league NBA for the season preparation .

After only a brief assignment in a preparation game in 2006, Starosta was released from his contract and not taken over by the Cavaliers in the season squad. Then Starosta only got one contract in the second Spanish league LEB with the CAI club from Saragossa . The club was the successor club of a first division club that had been dissolved six years earlier, some under the same sponsor name , and was looking for a "return" to the top division ACB . In the 2006/07 season they failed as third in the main round in the play-offs for promotion to the semi-final series in just under five games against Climalia León . Then Starosta had his only final participation in the 2007 European Championship with the Czech national team . In the preliminary group in Palma , however, the Czech Republic lost all three preliminary round matches and was ranked 13th among 16 participating teams. With his club from Zaragoza, the direct rise in the 2007/08 season succeeded as a superior table first after only six defeats in 34 games in the main round. Starosta stayed in the CAI Saragossa squad in the 2008/09 season, but hardly got any more time and went back one class to the LEB Oro in February 2009, where he ended the season for the former first division club from Lleida . At the end of the season, however, the club just missed out on promotion to the play-offs due to the poorer direct comparison, despite a positive season balance. For the 2009/10 season Starosta got a contract with league rivals from Melilla , who had just missed promotion in the play-off final. Behind his former club from Zaragoza, who managed to get promoted again after relegation, Melilla finished second in the main round, but was eliminated in the semi-final series of the play-offs from the race for second promotion place. With his next club from Ourense Starosta rose as bottom of the 2010/11 season from the Spanish second division. But for the following season 2011/12 he got a contract with Basket Navarra from Pamplona , who lost as the main round third in the semi-final play-offs in three games against the later promoted ViveMenorca . In the following season 2012/13 Navarra was only eleventh in the table and missed the play-offs for promotion, but Starosta, who was named MVP of the matchday as the most effective player in the preseason , was the most effective player and MVP of the on three matchdays Matchdays. Even seen over the entire season, he had the highest effectiveness value on average and was declared the season's MVP in the LEB Oro. As the best rebounder on average with 9.8 rebounds per game and second-best scorer with 15.5 points per game, he barely missed an average double-double.
