David McCray (born November 6, 1986 in Speyer ) is a German basketball coach and former player. In the basketball league he played for Karlsruhe, Ludwigsburg, Bonn and Quakenbrück and was on the field in a total of 423 games in the top German division. During his career he was also used in the European club competitions Champions League and EuroChallenge .

Life

player

McCray, whose father is American and whose mother is German, began his basketball career in his hometown at TSV Speyer before moving to the first division at BG Karlsruhe . On December 26, 2004, the player made his Bundesliga debut against Braunschweig at BG . After the relegation of BG Karlsruhe from the basketball Bundesliga in 2007, McCray moved to EnBW Ludwigsburg . He received a double license and in the 2007/2008 season, in addition to his appearances in Ludwigsburg, he also played in the 2nd Pro B basketball league for VfL Kirchheim Knights . With Kirchheim McCray managed promotion to the 2. Bundesliga Pro A . From the 2008/2009 season he played exclusively in the Bundesliga. After four years with changeable statistics, McCray decided for the 2012/2013 season to leave the club and move within the BBL. He signed a two-year contract with Telekom Baskets Bonn . After his contract expired, McCray left Bonn and signed a contract with another Bundesliga club, the Artland Dragons from Quakenbrück. After the end of the 2014/2015 season, the Artland Dragons surprisingly stopped their game operations and McCray was also released from his contract. He then moved back to Ludwigsburg, where he played until the end of his competitive sports career in 2019. In Ludwigsburg he was team captain and the favorite of the supporters. The Ludwigsburg team decided not to give back number 4 worn by McCray in order to honor the native of Speyer. McCray, who was particularly known for his strengths in defense, achieved the best point value of his Bundesliga time in the course of the 2012/13 game year when he scored an average of 7.4 points per game for Bonn.

McCray was a selection player of the German Basketball Federation in the youth division , he also played international matches for the A2 national team and took part in the Summer Universiade in Belgrade in 2009 .

Trainer

In the summer of 2016, already during his time as a player, he passed the exams to obtain the B coach license. After the end of his professional career in 2019, he became a member of the Ludwigsburg Bundesliga staff as an assistant coach and from then on was responsible in particular for athletic training and also took on tasks in the youth sector. In summer 2020 he was promoted to head coach of the Ludwigsburg team in the youth basketball league and also remained assistant coach of the Bundesliga team.
