Michael Stockton (born May 7, 1989 in Spokane , Washington ) is an American basketball player . From 2017 to 2019 he was with the German first division club BG Göttingen , since summer 2019 with Cholet Basket .

After studying in his home country, Stockton turned professional and played four years in Germany from 2011 , two of which were in the top division basketball league with the MHP Giants Ludwigsburg. In the 2015/16 season Stockton played in his home country in the NBA Development League with the Canton Charge. Stockton's father John was also a basketball player and is considered a member of the " Dream Team " and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as one of the best development players of all time. His brother David played in Bundesliga competitor Medi Bayreuth in the 2018/19 season .

Career

Stockton grew up in Utah and later in Spokane , where his father returned with his family after the end of his active career. Stockton returned to Salt Lake City to study at Westminster College in 2007 . During his studies, Stockton was active in basketball for the Griffins college team in the NAIA . The NAIA is a rather insignificant league for people who do not aspire to a career in US professional sport. Within the NAIA, however, the Griffins basketball team is one of the better teams and has won its conference several times in the past and qualified for the national final of the NAIA. In Stockton's active time they won the "Frontier Conference" in 2009 and 2010 and reached the quarter-finals once and the second round in the finals, in which they were eliminated against the eventual runner-up. Stockton was able to improve individually in each of his four seasons and achieved a good 18 points and four assists per game in his last year .

After the end of his university career, Stockton tried his hand at being a professional. After he was not drawn by any NBA team in the 2011 NBA draft , he got a contract with the German second division club from Karlsruhe in 2011 in the ProA. In the ProA 2011/12 , the former first division team as ninth in the table with Stockton just missed the play-offs for promotion to the top division. In the summer of 2012, the “ rookie ” and former NAIA student even got the opportunity to play Utah Jazz in the NBA Summer League for his father's former team . After he returned to Karlsruhe, Stockton was able to confirm his individual statistics from the previous season in the ProA 2012/13 and improved slightly to twelve points and almost four assists per game. The Karlsruher improved to fourth place in the table after the regular season and moved into the play-offs, in which Stockton was able to improve statistically, in the semi-final series, which decided on the athletic promotion right to the basketball Bundesliga . Here they were only very narrowly defeated in the maximum number of five games to the main round first and later play-off winner SC RASTA Vechta .

Nevertheless, Stockton was able to play in the top German division in the following season, after he moved from Baden to Württemberg to the first division club MHP Riesen from Ludwigsburg for the basketball Bundesliga 2013/14 and was appointed team captain there. With the Ludwigsburg, who had previously only been relegated to relegation by purchasing a wildcard , Stockton was able to narrowly but successfully qualify for the play-offs of the top eight teams for the championship twice. Here they were eliminated in the first round against the main round first and later title winners FC Bayern Munich (2014) and Brose Baskets (2015). After two years, coach John Patrick Stockton no longer considered for the squad for the following season, instead this was selected by Grand Rapids Drive in the Entry Draft of the NBA Development League (D-League). The Drive exchanged the rights to Stockton, however, so that this moved to league competitor Charge from Canton (Ohio) .

After stints in Russia and Greece, Stockton returned to Germany for the 2017/18 season and signed a contract with the first division club BG Göttingen . For the 2019/20 season, Stockton moved to France to Cholet Basket .
