Coby Joseph Karl (born June 8, 1983 in Great Falls , Montana ) is a retired American basketball coach and player. After studying in his home country, Karl was a professional in the NBA and the NBA Development League (D-League). Since he did not have the breakthrough there, he then played in Europe. After stints in Spain and Italy , he played for the German Bundesliga basketball team MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg for two years . Karl's father, George Karl , was a basketball player in the NBA and is a well-known coach in the NBA.

Career

player

Coby Karl went to study at the Boise State University , where he worked for the high school team, Broncos back in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) of the NCAA played. After reaching the semi-finals in the WAC championship tournament in 2004, they were invited to the nationwide National Invitation Tournament , in which, however, they were eliminated in the second round against the Golden Eagles of Marquette University . Two years followed with a negative season balance and also in Karl's final year 2007, a slightly positive season balance was not enough to qualify for a postseason tournament. With 1,698 points he was on his departure from the university team in third place of the eternal basket hunter list and with 266 successful throws from behind the three-point line the most successful distance thrower of the Broncos; with 408 assists , he ranked third in the Broncos' best list.

After Karl was not selected by any club in the 2007 NBA draft , he was still able to earn a squad place at the Los Angeles Lakers through the training camp . With this team, however, he was given over and over again during the NBA 2007/08 in the farm team D-Fenders to collect game practice. At the end of the season he was back in the squad of the Lakers and was used in a play-off game for two minutes when the Lakers won the title in the Western Conference , but lost the NBA finals against the Boston Celtics . After 17 season appearances with the Lakers and the D-Fenders, Karl played in the 2008/09 season for the D-League champion Idaho Stampede, who were among other things the Denver Nuggets farm team , where his father George Karl was coach. However, there were no appearances at the Nuggets, instead Coby Karl moved to the Spanish ACB league in January 2009 to DKV Joventut from Badalona , where he played with Ricky Rubio and the German national player Jan-Hendrik Jagla . While one was already eliminated in European club competitions, Joventut missed the title defense in the Copa del Rey cup competition and was eliminated as the fifth-placed team in the main round in the first round of the championship play-offs against Real Madrid . For the 2009/10 season Karl returned to his home country and was under contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers until the beginning of January 2010, for which, however, he only completed three short-term appearances in championship games. He first returned to the D-League for the Idaho Stampede before signing a ten-day contract with the Golden State Warriors at the end of the month, for which he stood on the floor an average of 27 minutes in four games. After the Warriors did not renew the contract, he continued the season with the Idaho Stampede, which, however, missed the move into the play-offs of the D-League. Then he was in the squad of the Denver Nuggets trained by his father, where he remained without use and was finally released from his contract in the summer of 2010.

For the 2010/11 season, Karl got a contract with the Spanish club from Granada . For this team he was on the 20th match day of the ACB League "Player of the Week" as the most effective player of the day. His compatriot and team-mate Rob Kurz , who had already received this award twice, switched to the Artland Dragons in January 2011 and Granada ended the season after only seven wins this season as a relegated penultimate place in the table. After the end of the season in Spain, Karl joined Emporio Armani from Milan for the play-offs of the Italian championship EA7 . The table third in the main round lost the semi-final series against Bennet Cantù . For the following season, Karl stayed in Italy and played in the top division Lega Basket Serie A for Fabi Shoes from Montegranaro . The third from bottom place in the table at the end of the season was enough for the team to keep up. After Karl was allowed to be active for a month with the Portland Trail Blazers in the pre-season preparation for the 2012/13 season , he moved back to the D-League at the Idaho Stampede at the start of the season. Their season was not particularly successful, however, and Karl was not appointed to the squad of an NBA club. At the beginning of the 2013/14 season he therefore played again in Italy with Grissin Bon from Reggio nell'Emilia , for which he was also active in the 2013/14 EuroChallenge . While the team later won this competition, Karl and the club split in December 2013. Karl then joined the German first division club MHP Riesen from Ludwigsburg , for whom Michael Stockton , another son of an NBA personality, was already active. With the club, which in the previous year had only been able to stay up through the acquisition of a wild card , they made it into the play-offs for the championship in eighth place in the 2013/14 basketball Bundesliga . Here you had to admit defeat to the main round first Bayern Munich in the first round despite a home win that Karl secured with a buzzer beater , in four rated games.

In the course of the 2014/2015 season, Karl's role in the MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg system became noticeably smaller. As a result, Karl asked for approval for a change in March 2015. The club complied with his wish and Karl moved back to the American NBA Development League and joined the Reno Bighorns there. He ended his playing career in the summer of 2015.

Trainer

Like his father, Karl got into the coaching business, his first position in the 2015/16 season was as assistant coach at the Westchester Knicks in the NBA D-League. In September 2016 he was hired in the same division by the Los Angeles D-Fenders (renamed South Bay Lakers in 2017) as head coach.
