John Turek (born February 19, 1983 in Council Bluffs , Iowa ) is an American basketball player . After studying in his home country, Turek started playing as a professional in Europe in 2005. In addition to a station in Belgium , he switched back and forth between clubs from the Netherlands , Poland and Germany . In the 2013/14 season, Turek is under contract in France with the second division team Champagne Basket.

Career

After graduating from high school in 2001, Turek opted for a scholarship from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in the neighboring US state. Their university team (Corn-) Huskers played in Turek's active phase in the Big 12 Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), in which they had no chance of being awarded the championship title and did not qualify for a national NCAA final . At the Huskers, Turek played temporarily with the later basketball Bundesliga professional Andrew Drevo .

After graduating, Turek turned professional in Europe in 2005 and began his career in the Dutch FEB at BC Omniworld from Almere . With this club he retired at the end of the season in the first play-off round of the championship against defending champion Demon Astronauts Amsterdam . In the following season 2006/07 he played for the league competitor and runner-up Hanzevast Capitals from Groningen . This failed somewhat surprisingly in the first play-off round at the former master Astronauts Amsterdam. In the following season 2007/08 Turek played in neighboring Belgium for the Dragons from Ghent in the Ethias League . After only six victories of the season, they remained at the bottom of the table in the closed league and had no chance of reaching a play-off position. However, Turek himself was viewed by the expert forum eurobasket.com as one of the two best " legionnaires " in his playing position and voted into the "All-Import Second Team".

For the 2008/09 season Turek moved to Polish runner-up PGE Turów to Zgorzelec in the Polska Liga Koszykówki . In the European club competition Eurocup 2008/09 they won both games against the German representative Brose Baskets , but were eliminated before reaching the second group stage. With Turek Turów again reached the final series of the championship at the end of the season, which in turn was lost to the series champion Asseco Prokom . For the basketball league 2009/10 Turek got a contract with the first division promoted Phoenix from Hagen in the German basketball league . He managed to keep the league successfully with a victory lead.

Turek then returned to Groningen in 2010. The club there was now called GasTerra Flames after a new name sponsor and the FEB league also introduced the name “Dutch Basketball League”. The Flames reached the final series of the championship, but lost just under seven games against the new champions Zorg en Zekerheid Leiden . Turek then went back to Poland, where he and Trefl Sopot, who had re-established after the move from Asseco Prokom to Gdynia , also moved into the final series of the 2012 championship after their former team PGE Turów had been eliminated in the semi-final series. The final series of the bitter rivals from the Tricity between Sopot and Gdynia also went to Turek's competitors in seven games, who won their ninth championship in a row.

For the basketball Bundesliga 2012/13 Turek then went back to Germany, where he joined the Neckar Giants from Ludwigsburg . At the end of the season, the Neckar Giants lost the decisive game to keep their league at the Fraport Skyliners on the last day of the match . After the license was not granted for the sporting climber Düsseldorf Baskets , the Ludwigsburg were able to secure the league by purchasing a " Wild Card ". Turek was relegated to the second division anyway, as he moved to France and signed a contract with the second division Champagne Basket from Reims in the LNB Pro B for the 2013/14 season.
