Lucius Baebius Dives († 189 BC in Massilia [now Marseille ]) was a politician and military officer of the Roman Republic from the plebeian family of the Baebier .

Life

Lucius Baebius Dives, Praetor of the year 189 BC BC (see below), is probably identical to the one in the sources in 202 BC. BC mentioned Lucius Baebius , who was the legate of Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus , who landed in North Africa in the final phase of the Second Punic War . Together with Lucius Fabius and Lucius Sergius, Baebius went to Carthage on Scipio's behalf to demonstrate against his violation of the armistice with Rome caused by an act of piracy and to demand reparation. The Roman ambassadors acted very arrogant and scoffed at the fact that the Punians were counting on the support of Hannibal , who had landed back in North Africa after a long absence . This presumptuous behavior meant that only a few Punic senators voted in favor of returning the captured Roman ships and their cargo that had been captured under the leadership of a ship commander named Hasdrubal and towed into the port of Carthage. Another group of councilors aimed for a total break with Rome. She instructed the crews of two three -oars to escort the ambassadors Scipios sailing back on a Roman quinquereme to their camp in Castra Cornelia (Galaat el-Andless) and to turn them on arrival at the mouth of the Medjerda , whereupon three Carthaginian triremes waiting in hiding place should attack the Roman five-oars. Many Roman marines were killed in this attack, but the three ambassadors, including Baebius, managed to escape.

Thus a renewal of the war was imminent. On Scipio's order, Baebius took over the defense of the Roman camp. He soon saw how those Carthaginians docked not far from Castra Cornelia, who had negotiated in Italy and were now returning home with Roman escort. These Carthaginian negotiators feared that they would be subject to acts of revenge on their part because of the rude treatment that Scipio's emissaries had suffered, but Scipio ordered Baebius to treat them politely and to dismiss them unmolested.

189 BC Lucius Baebius Dives was praetor and was to administer Hispania ulterior . While he was on his way to his province, he was attacked and injured by the Ligurians , and many of his men were killed. He managed to escape to Massilia (now Marseille ), but died there three days after his arrival. The Roman Senate then determined that the propaetor of Etruria, Publius Junius Brutus , should succeed Baebius as Praetor of Hispania ulterior.
