Gwiyomi (also Kiyomi ) (귀요 미송) is a K-pop song by the South Korean musician Hari. The song has become an internet phenomenon , especially in Asia .

Internet resonance

The song was released in South Korea on February 18, 2013. Other versions of the song were created by Cube Entertainment , among others . Due to the sudden distribution of the video, parallels to the South Korean song Gangnam Style are seen.

Etymological origin

In many translations, the word Gwiyomi is translated as "cute". However, this is only half true. The word Gwiyomi (귀 요미) is made up of a total of two words. The first syllable Gwi (귀) means "ear" or "spoon". The following syllable yo (요) turns it into a kind of possession, so that Gwiyo (귀요) translates as either "someone's ear" or "someone's spoon". The last syllable mi (미) translates as pretty, so the entire word Gwiyomi literally means either "ear of beauty" or "spoon of beauty". This ambiguity is a subtle allusion to the German word "Häschen" because the ears of rabbits are called spoons in German.

Other versions

In 2014, the Korean-British actress Clara published the "Gwiyomi Song 2" ( 귀요 미송 2 ).
