history

2008 to 2011: Founding as Giants Düsseldorf

As Giants Dusseldorf for 2008/09 was founded followed by basketball league license of Bayer Giants Leverkusen adopted.

Since the main sponsor of the Leverkusen team, Bayer , had significantly reduced its commitment, the management decided, after no financing alternatives could be found in Leverkusen , to transfer the Bundesliga license to Düsseldorf in order to guarantee the continued existence of Bundesliga basketball in the region. A large part of the team and coach Achim Kuczmann followed the new GmbH and from then on played in Düsseldorf. The subsequent Düsseldorf Giants GmbH had to file for bankruptcy after the 2009/2010 season - more precisely on May 5, 2010. Since July 2010, Düsseldorf Basketball GmbH has acted as the economic sponsor of the team in Düsseldorf. After the move, the basketball department of TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen with the ProA team Bayer Giants Leverkusen still existed. The company Gloria Hotels & Resorts, part of Özaltin Holding, became the main sponsor of the Düsseldorf Giants, who called themselves “Gloria Giants” from the 2010/11 season.

2011 to 2013: second rate, Düsseldorf Baskets, insolvency

After relegation in 2010/2011 , the Giants played in the second-rate ProA from the 2011/12 season . At the same time, the renaming of the BBC Oberkassel to Giants Düsseldorf e. V. a substructure in which youth work and popular sport should be organized. Despite the relegation, Gloria Hotels & Resorts extended its sponsorship. Head coach Murat Didin should make an immediate return to the basketball league . However, the direct sporting return did not succeed. In the playoffs, the team failed in the semi-finals at the Kirchheim Knights and thus missed promotion. The Giants also failed when they tried to secure their return to the first division by wildcard. The wildcard was given to the LTi Gießen 46ers by the league and the other clubs . In addition, it became known that there had been problems with solvency over the course of the season. Initially, the Giants did not receive a license for the ProA or ProB 2012/2013. After a legal dispute between the Giants and the league leadership, the Giants finally received, under strict conditions, the license to play in the ProA for the 2012/2013 season . However, the previous name sponsor Gloria Hotels & Resorts dropped out of its sponsorship and was thus deleted from the team name.

Shortly afterwards, the team announced that they would be dropping the Giants name appendix for the 2012/2013 season and starting the game as Düsseldorf Baskets . The logo was then adapted accordingly. The 2012/2013 season was successful in terms of sport. The team moved into the final of the ProA championship and thus secured the right to promotion to the basketball league. However, the baskets were refused the license for the highest division because the economic security could not be sufficiently proven. Düsseldorf appealed against this decision, but this was rejected by the responsible license committee of the Basketball Bundesliga. The Baskets thereupon lodged an appeal with the competent arbitration tribunal of the Basketball Bundesliga. During the oral hearing before the arbitration tribunal on June 21, 2013, Düsseldorf withdrew its objection to the decision of the Basketball Bundesliga. During the proceedings, it became known that Düsseldorf Baskets had debts of € 108,000 in 2012 and that these had not yet been repaid in full on March 15, 2013.

On August 20, 2013, the license for the ProA was withdrawn from the Düsseldorf Baskets. The association is said to have violated license conditions, and it was subsequently announced that the requirements for the granting of the license were not met. The Düsseldorf Baskets were the first to be relegated to the ProA in the 2013/14 season after the club accepted the license withdrawal. In March 2014, the Düsseldorf Baskets filed for bankruptcy and also waived the application for a license for the ProB season 2014/15 .

Since 2013: Regionalliga as Giants and syndicate with ART Düsseldorf

In the following years only the parent club of the dissolved GmbH, the Giants Düsseldorf, took part in the game operations of the fourth-class Regionalliga West. After ART Düsseldorf's promotion to the Regionalliga West in the 2015/16 season , two Düsseldorf clubs played in the fourth-highest league. For this reason, it was decided at the end of the season to found a syndicate with SG ART Giants Düsseldorf and to bundle basketball efforts in the city. The SG ART Giants Düsseldorf won the championship in the 1st regional league in the 2018/19 season and achieved the associated promotion to the ProB .
