Predrag Krunić (born November 27, 1967 ) is a Bosnian-Serbian basketball coach . The Serb, who is married to a German, has been working in Germany since 1998 and was German champion in 2009 with the EWE Baskets Oldenburg .

Career

Started as a trainer

Predrag Krunić graduated from the Belgrade Sports University in 1992 with a degree in sports. His professor was Milivoje Karalejić, who would later work as a fitness trainer at Alba Berlin, among others. Krunić, however, initially signed a contract with Zemun Belgrade, where he worked from 1994 to 1998 as coordinator and coach of the youth team. He then moved to Germany to the Telekom Baskets from Bonn , where he worked for three years as an assistant trainer under Bruno Socé .

Head coach at Telekom Baskets Bonn (2001-2005)

After his departure in the summer of 2001, Krunić was promoted to head coach. At the age of 34, he was the youngest head coach in the basketball league . In the first three years as a coach in Bonn, he reached the semi-finals of the German championship three times, as well as the semi-finals of the German Cup (2002/03) and the quarter-finals of the Saporta Cup (2001/02).

In 2002 he was also given the honor of overseeing the selection of the South at the BBL's annual Allstar Game. In doing so, however, he received some criticism because he instructed his players to defend hard in this game, which was actually aimed at show and fun, and among other things had a " full field defense " played.

For his success with the Telekom Baskets Bonn, he was rewarded with a new three-year contract in summer 2004. But the following season, his team was plagued by injuries and internal disputes and missed the playoffs in ninth place. Although they still reached the cup final, they lost there against the Rhenish rivals RheinEnergie Köln . A few weeks after the end of the season, Krunić was finally on leave, and he turned down the offer to continue working as a youth coach in Bonn.

German championship with the EWE Baskets Oldenburg (2007–2012)

Krunić paused for two years and only signed a two-year contract with EWE Baskets from Oldenburg after his contract in Bonn had expired in summer 2007 . After a few problems at the beginning, his team improved and reached the playoffs in fifth place, in which the reigning German champions were thrown out of the competition in the quarter-finals with the Brose Baskets from Bamberg . Subsequently, however, they failed in the semi-finals at the later German champions Alba Berlin . In the following summer break, his contract was extended to 2011. High achievers like Rickey Paulding , Jason Gardner and Jasmin Perković were retained, with Je'Kel Foster Krunić brought on a player who also became a support. It paid off. In the 2008/2009 season, Krunić became German champions with Oldenburg. You went into the championship round as second in the table. The final against his former club, Telekom Baskets Bonn, was only decided in the final seconds of the decisive fifth game. Krunić had formed a unit out of the team and created a family feeling in the squad, Marko Scekić later described how the coach proceeded during the championship season.

In the following season Oldenburg was allowed to start in the ULEB Euroleague , but was eliminated there in the preliminary round. The previous year's success could not be repeated in the Bundesliga either and was eliminated in the first playoff round against the New York Phantoms Braunschweig .

The EWE Baskets were unable to organize the 2011/2012 season as they had hoped and never managed to achieve the victories they had hoped for. After several defeats, Krunić was released from his duties as a coach in Oldenburg in March 2012. Krunić had been accused of having not used enough of their capabilities in the previous weeks, even in duels with opponents from the relegation zone.

Relegation battle with BBC Bayreuth (2013-2014)

On March 25, 2013 Krunić was the new coach of the Bundesliga club BBC Bayreuth. There he succeeded Marco van den Berg , who had previously been dismissed after several negative results. Krunić took over the BBC Bayreuth in 15th place in the table with a record of eleven wins and 16 defeats. Under his leadership, the Upper Franconians achieved relegation in the BBL: On the penultimate game day, this was achieved through an away win against the Central German BC . Krunić's contract in Bayreuth was automatically extended to 2014. On December 29, 2013, Krunić was given leave of absence from the club due to the team's poor athletic performance. Before the release, the team suffered seven defeats in a row under his leadership.

Anwil Włocławek (2014–2015)

From October 2014 Krunić worked as a coach for the Polish club Anwil Włocławek in the highest basketball league in Poland. At the end of March 2015, the club separated from him and three players due to financial problems. The FIBA court in Geneva ruled in October 2015 that Anwil had to pay Krunić around 19,500 euros in outstanding salary.

Central German BC

In the winter of 2015 Krunić became the new head coach of the Central German BC , who at that time was ranked at the bottom of the Bundesliga table. He succeeded Silvano Poropat , who had previously resigned from office due to unsuccessfulness. Under his leadership, the MBC managed to catch up almost successfully and it was possible to celebrate victories against FC Bayern Munich and Krunić's former Club Telekom Baskets Bonn . The relegation battle was only decided on the last day of the game, and the MBC ultimately had to go to the ProA . Krunić then left the MBC again.

Reunion with the Telekom Baskets Bonn (2016-2019)

In September 2016, Krunić, who during the game as a coach on the sideline had a significant impact on his players with gestures and instructions and in this way tried to drive them to their top performance, became the coach of Telekom Baskets Bonn for the second time in his career , after the previous Bonn head coach Silvano Poropat had to resign due to illness. Krunić, who lives in Bonn, agreed to the Bonn team at short notice and signed a contract until summer 2017. He looked after the Rhinelander until January 2019, before releasing his duties after two defeats on the international stage and changing performances of his team in the Bundesliga has been. After the Champions League game against Freiburg im Üechtland , which , according to President Wolfgang Wiedlich , was a “mentally and athletically desolate performance”, “no other way was seen than to leave Predrag Krunić”, it said the club management.
