Career

After graduating from high school in Bonn (1974), Wiedlich completed his community service (1975–1977) and studied geography (major) and sports science (minor) for the teaching post of secondary level II at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn, accompanied a sports science film documentary Project at Jomo Kenyatta University in Nairobi (Kenya) and took his state examination in 1983. He then switched to journalism, completed a traineeship at the Bonner General-Anzeiger, during which he received a US grant from the John J. McCloy Fund of the American Council on Germany . As an editor, he worked from 1986 in various departments of the General-Anzeiger, specializing in scientific topics and here early on on issues of climate change . Since 1993, Wiedlich has headed the newspaper's weekend journal (magazine for knowledge and culture). From 2009 to 2014 he was part of an investigative team at General-Anzeiger, which researched the biggest building scandal in Bonn's post-war history ( World Conference Center Bonn ). Wiedlich has received numerous journalist prizes, including the Theodor Wolff Prize (1995) and the Guardian Prize of the German Daily Press (2010).

In parallel to studying and journalism, Wiedlich was involved in basketball in Bonn. In 1979 he started as a coach in the 3rd district league at SC Fortuna Bonn, whose basketball department he headed from 1980. His goal was to develop basketball into the most popular sport in Bonn. As part of several mergers, including the merger of the basketball departments of SC Fortuna Bonn and Godesberger TV (1992), and the acquisition of Deutsche Telekom AG as the main sponsor (1993), Telekom Baskets Bonn eV was founded in 1995 , which was part of the Bundesliga promotion. Wiedlich has been president of the club since 1998, after his predecessor Dr. Hans Braun died unexpectedly early at the age of 58. From 2001 to 2006, Wiedlich was Vice President of the Basketball Bundesliga . From 1999 he was also involved in the financing, planning and construction of the first Bundesliga-compatible basketball hall in club hands in Germany and the consolidation of all of the club's youth activities in 13 sports halls in Bonn. The Telekom Dome includes a main hall with 6,000 seats as well as its own training center for children and young people and was inaugurated in June 2008 with the final series against Alba Berlin . At the beginning of December 2018, he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for his many years of commitment to basketball, but also for his publications on climate change.
