career

Voigt, who comes from Cabot (US state Vermont ) and has German ancestors, played basketball at the local Cabot High School as a teenager and was used in the position of development player. He then studied at Pomona College (state of California ) and was a member of the local soccer team . In 1998 and 1999 Voigt was an intern with the NBA team Los Angeles Clippers and worked for a company in the IT industry. Between 1999 and 2001 he worked for the San Antonio Spurs and worked in their video department. He lived temporarily with the Texans' head coach and his family, Gregg Popovich .

In the 2001/02 game year he was entrusted with administrative tasks on the basketball staff of the University of Texas at Austin , and in 2002/03 he worked as an assistant coach at Metropolitan State University . From autumn 2003 Voigt held  the position of head coach at the Norwegian first division club Ulriken Eagles . During his time in Norway, Voigt was also the assistant coach of the Norwegian national team (Norway's then head coach Mathias Eckhoff later became Voigt's assistant for the Nigerian national team). In the summer of 2006 he took up the position of coach at the Vermont Frost Heaves in the US ABA league. The team owner had selected two candidates (including Voigt) to fill the coaching position and then let the Frost Heaves supporters vote on the appointment on the Internet. The majority named Voigt, who thus received the position. In 2007 and 2008 he was named Trainer of the Year in the ABA. He also looked after the team after they moved to the PBL league in 2008. He stayed with the Vermont Frost Heaves until 2009. At the end of July 2009 Voigt was introduced as the new head coach of the Bakersfield Jam ( NBA D-League ) team. He led Bakersfield three times into the championship round of the D-League and worked in this post until the end of the 2013/14 season.

In the 2014/15 season, Voigt was an assistant coach on the staff of the Chinese team Shanxi Brave Dragons. At the beginning of July 2015 he became the Nigerian national coach and led the team to win the African Championship in August of the same year. By winning the final, Nigeria managed to end a series of defeats against Angola that had been going on since 1987 and at the same time to become African champions for the first time. He also oversaw the selection of Nigeria at the 2016 Summer Olympics. There Voigt led the team to a win against Croatia, the remaining four games of the Olympic tournament were lost. His contract expired after the Olympics. Voigt was again on the coaching staff of the Shanxi Brave Dragons in China in the 2016/17 season.

In November 2017 he was hired as the new head coach of the Angola national team. He received a four-year contract. At the 2019 World Cup, Angola won against the Philippines under Voigt's leadership , and they remained without a win in the other four games. In addition to his role as national coach of Angola, Voigt took up the position of head coach of the relegation-threatened German Bundesliga club Telekom Baskets Bonn at the beginning of February 2020 . He signed a contract with the Rhinelanders until the end of the 2019/20 season.
