Edel Berit Kristine Hætta Eriksen (born October 17, 1921 in Guovdageaidnu (Kautokeino) ) is a Norwegian - Sami educator and cultural politician . She worked for the recognition of the Sami languages and the Sami culture.

Life

Edel Hætta Eriksen first grew up in Guovdageaidnu. She later moved to Vadsø , where she attended middle school. There she was taught in Norwegian, which initially gave her difficulties, although she had also learned Norwegian in Guovdageaidnu . Because of her experiences there, she later fought for the appreciation of Sami culture.

In 1949 Eriksen finished her teacher training in Tromsø . She then returned to the elementary school in her homeland of Guovdageaidnu as a teacher. There she sometimes taught in her mother tongue, which was special because at that time students were still forbidden to speak Sami in school. In the 1950s, Eriksen sat in Guovdageaidnu's local parliament for two terms. She later went to Oslo to study Sami at the university there, so that she could better teach her mother tongue. She passed her exam there in 1965. From 1969 she headed the elementary school in Guovdageaidnu as principal.

Between 1956 and 1963 and again between 1974 and 1977 she was involved in the Seed Council . She later said that this organization had no power and therefore demands to abolish the Sami Parliament Sameting and return to the Sami Council were wrong. In 1977 she became the first director of the Sami Education Council , which was established after the Norwegian Parliament Storting decided that Sami culture should be protected.
