Liv Inger Somby (born March 25, 1962 in Guohppenjavvi near Gáregasnjárga , Ohcejohka municipality ( Utsjoki in Finnish ) in Finland ) is a Sami - Norwegian journalist , author and university teacher . She specializes in indigenous journalism and teaches at the Sámi allaskuvla (Sami University) in Guovdageaidnu (Kautokeino) .

Somby was born in 1962 in the village of Guohppenjavvi, which belongs to the Utsjoki municipality ( Ohcejohka in northern Sami ). She received her training at Finnmark University / Tromsø University , the Norwegian Journalism University (now Oslomet ), Letchworth Central High, New York and the Sami University.

From 1988 to 2017 Somby worked as a journalist for 30 years. During this time she worked for the Swedish television (SVT) , the Norwegian radio (NRK) and its Sami department NRK Sápmi in Kautokeino.

Somby worked as a consultant from 2010 to 2011 at the “Gáldu” (Resource Center for the Rights of Indigenous Peoples) in Kautokeino. It has been part of the Norwegian Human Rights Institution ( Norges institusjon for menneskerettigheter (NIM)) since January 2017 . She was a member of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (Sannhets- og forsoningskommisjonen) , which investigated Norwegian politics and wrongdoing against Sámi , Kvenen and Norwegian Finns for the Storting .

Somby has been teaching indigenous journalism at the Sami University (English name: Sámi University for Applied Sciences ) in Kautokeino since 2017 .
