Derrick Phelps (born July 31, 1972 in New York City's Queens borough ) is a former American basketball player who played as a professional, especially in Europe , including several seasons in the German basketball league . Because of his game overview and the ability to act as point guard to direct and playmaker the play of his team, he got the nickname General . With Alba Berlin Phelps was twice German champion , while he was double winner in 2002 with victory in the cup competition .

United States

While studying at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill , Phelps played for the prestigious Tar Heels basketball team under Dean Smith . In 1993 he won the national championship of the NCAA Division I together with Donald Williams, Henrik Rödl , George Lynch and Eric Montross in a dramatic final against the later disqualified Wolverines of the University of Michigan , that by a technical error of the college star and later number 1 picks in the 1993 NBA Draft Chris Webber was decided when he was in possession of the ball and demanded a no longer available time out in the final seconds. Phelps still holds the record for most ball wins of his college career and one game in the tar heels, for which Michael Jordan was also active in college.

After he was not selected in the 1994 NBA draft , Phelps first played two seasons for the Chicago Rockers in the Continental Basketball Association after completing his studies . At the end of the 1994/95 season he came to three brief appearances with the Sacramento Kings in the NBA . He was also in the squad at the training camps before the start of the season at the Milwaukee Bucks (1994) and the Philadelphia 76ers (1997) and was selected in the expansion draft in 1995 by new league Vancouver Grizzlies, but never appointed to the season squad. After a season in Germany in 1996/97, he returned to the CBA for the 1997/98 season to play for the Rockers , who had now been transferred to La Crosse as Bobcats , and Rockford Lightning.

Europe

In 1996 Phelps was signed by TTL Bamberg for the BBL season 1996/97 . Bamberg was eliminated this season in the play-off semi- finals against the promoted and later runner-up Telekom Baskets Bonn. This club finally committed Phelps himself, where he played from 1998 to 2000 and 1999 was able to achieve another runner-up for the club. For the 2000/01 BBL season , Phelps was finally signed by the dominant series champion Alba Berlin and he and his teammates, including his Tar Heels teammate Henrik Rödl, achieved two further championships in 2001 and 2002, the latter in combination with the cup victory as a double. In 2002 Phelps moved to Limoges, France, for the 1993 European Cup winner Cercle Saint-Pierre (CSP), who was in crisis and was only just able to avoid relegation that season before it was dissolved the following year. Phelps had already returned to the German BBL in the 2003/04 season and competed for EnBW Ludwigsburg, which stumbled in sporting terms and only remained in the league because of the bankruptcies of Brandt Hagen and FIBA EuroCup Challenge winner MBC Weissenfels . After a few games for the Polish club Śląsk from Breslau , Phelps was active in the 2004/05 season for the EiffelTowers from Nijmegen , Netherlands . While the team merged with EBDC Den Bosch in 2005 and moved to Den Bosch , Phelps moved back to Bamberg , where he began his European career in 1996. In the 2005/06 BBL season the defending champion with Phelps ended up in the championship semifinals in 1997, this time against the eventual champions RheinEnergie Köln .

Subsequently, Phelps was still active for Spartak Primorje from Vladivostok on the Pacific coast in the Asian part of Russia . In the 2009/10 season he also played under his former Bonn coach Bruno Socé at the Romanian club from Medias .
