Martynas Mažeika (born January 29, 1985 in Klaipėda ) is a Lithuanian basketball player.

Career

Martynas Mažeika was able to gain important experience in the Lithuanian Basketball League ( LKL ) early on in his home club Neptūnas Klaipėda . At the age of 15 he had already established himself as a constant there and also shone in international competitions with excellent performances. Every year he was appointed to the national youth teams of Lithuania and completed all levels there.

In the 2004/05 season Mažeika switched to ALBA Berlin for 4 years and continued to develop and take on more and more responsibility. For the 2006/07 season he was awarded to Telekom Baskets Bonn in order to get more working time and thereby develop further. In the 2007/08 season Mazeika played in the Italian Lega A for Pierrel Capo d'Orlando . For the 2008/09 season he moved back to his home country and signed a contract with Neptunas Klaipeda. For the 2009/10 season Mazeika moved to Latvia to VEF Riga . There he signed a contract until 2010. In January 2010 his contract with VEF Riga was terminated at his own request and Mazeika moved to Greece to AEK Athens . After his contract expired at the end of the season, he returned to his hometown club in Klaipėda . There he was runner-up twice in the following seven years (2014, 2016) and participated in the EuroLeague , the Champions League and the EuroCup .

In 2017 he left Klaipėda and joined the Estonian club BC Kalev . In October 2017, he announced his commitment to Science City Jena , where he extended his contract early in April 2018 to 2020. After the descent of the Saalestädter in 2019, which made his contract null and void, the Lithuanian first moved to Tartu Ülikooli Korvpallimeeskond and later to league competitor BC Tallinna Kalev in the Estonian Baltic Basketball League . In early 2020 he signed a contract with his home club Neptūnas Klaipėda until the end of the season.

Style of play

The 1.92 m tall Mažeika plays in the position of the guard and, as a so-called combo guard, can take on the setup of the game as well as appear as a so-called "shooter". His very good and tough defense, for which he was named Defensive Player of the Year of the LKL in 2017, is particularly striking .
