Anthony "Tony" Joseph Gaffney Jr. (born November 14, 1984 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is an American professional basketball player . For the 2011/2012 season he moved to Germany and played for Telekom Baskets Bonn . He previously played for the Utah Flash in the NBA Development League . After the season in Bonn Gaffney tried again the jump into the NBA and played for the Utah Jazz in the NBA Summer League .

Youth and college

Gaffney attended Somerset High School in Somerset . After high school he first went to the Northfield Mount Hermon School in Mount Hermon for a preparatory year . He then stayed in his home state of Massachusetts to study and went to Boston University , where he played for the Terriers University Team in the America East Conference of NCAA Division I. After two years, he moved to college and went within the state to the University of Massachusetts Amherst . According to the regulations of the NCAA, he was therefore not allowed to participate in championship games for a year. At UMass, the abbreviation for the university, he then completed two seasons for the Minutemen in the Atlantic 10 Conference . In his final season he was voted "Defensive Player of the Year" ( German  defensive player of the year ) of his conference after he was able to achieve more than 100 shot blocks and 50 steals in one season .

Professional career

Due to the preparatory year and the change of university, Gaffney was two years older than other players at the end of their college career after the end of his college career. Among other things, this contributed to the fact that he was not selected in the NBA Draft 2009 by any professional NBA club . However, he got an invitation for the NBA Summer League team of the then NBA champions Los Angeles Lakers . There he was able to convince and got a preliminary contract for the professional team. At the end of the pre-season season in late October, however, he was the last player to be released from the limited season squad. Then Gaffney went to Israel and played at Hapoel Gilboa Galil together with Jeremy Pargo and Isaiah Swann in a team. After only one season, however, he suffered a foot injury. His contract was then terminated and he received treatment in his home country. Gilboa Galil, however, moved into the championship finals later at the end of the season and beat the otherwise dominant Maccabi Tel Aviv team there .

After treating his foot injury, Gaffney got a contract with the NBA and signed in April 2010 with the Boston Celtics, which he himself favored, in his hometown. However, he stayed with the Celtics until the end of the season without use. The Celtics, on the other hand, made it to the final of the NBA, where they lost to the defending champions Los Angeles Lakers, where Gaffney himself was still under contract in the pre-season. For the following season Gaffney was removed from the squad of the Celtics and he went back to Europe, where he played for Türk Telekom in Ankara, Turkey . This engagement ended prematurely after just two months, so that in January 2011 he signed a contract with the Utah Flash in the NBA Development League . There he knew how to convince again in particular through his qualities in defense and was chosen in the selection of the five best defense players of the season.

For the 2011/12 season he then signed a contract with Telekom Baskets from Bonn in the German basketball league . After a first-class start to the season with five opening wins, they only just reached the play-offs for the German championship, where they were defeated by defending champion and double winner Brose Baskets from Bamberg in the first round . During the summer break, Gaffney went back to his homeland, where he played in the Summer League for the Utah Jazz . It was announced in the summer that Gaffney would not return to Bonn due to further offers. Gaffney received several offers from Europe and finally switched to Joventut Badalona in Spain for the 2012/2013 season . There, however, his contract was prematurely terminated in the spring of 2013.

During the summer of 2013 Gaffney tried again to recommend himself for the NBA, but he could not prevail as desired. Gaffney then returned to Germany and rejoined Telekom Baskets Bonn for the 2013/2014 season , for which he played from 2011 to 2012. After a few weeks, Gaffney left the baskets for the time being to recommend himself for an NBA contract in trial training with the Memphis Grizzlies . The Baskets had promised him this possibility by means of a clause in the contract. With the Grizzlies, however, Gaffney received no contract for the regular season and was removed from the roster of the NBA team on October 26. So he played the 2013/14 season in Bonn. With the Baskets from Bonn Gaffney made it into the play-offs in 2014. There the team failed at the EWE Baskets Oldenburg with 2: 3 games. For the 2014/2015 season, Gaffney did not receive a new contract in Bonn.

September 2014, Gaffney signed a contract with Hapoel Jerusalem in Israel until summer 2015, which he then extended to 2016. In Jerusalem, too, Gaffney was able to convince nationally and internationally as a top performer. In the summer of 2016, however, he decided to return to Germany and signed a contract with Alba Berlin .
