Hapoel Giboa Galil is an Israeli basketball club from Gan Ner in the Gilboa regional association in the Galilean northern district . The association is a merger of Hapoel Galil Elyon and Hapoel Gilboa, which merged in 2008. In addition to the internationally better known Hapoel Jerusalem , which won the ULEB Cup in 2004, the association belongs to the association of Israeli workers' associations HaPoel . In contrast to the Jerusalem club, Gilboa Galil is more successful at the national level, as the championship has already been "wrested" twice from the dominant 50-time master Maccabi Tel Aviv . Otherwise, only Hapoel Holon has achieved this once since 1970 . In 2012 and 2013 they won the Balkan International Basketball League .

Hapoel Galil Elyon

Hapoel Galil Elyon was founded in 1978 and played its home games in the Heihal HaPais in Kfar Blum at the foot of the Golan Heights . After a cup final in 1987 they won under coach Muli Katzurin in 1988 for the first time a national title with the Israeli cup competition. After another finals in 1990, they won the cup again in 1992. After the second cup victory, Katzurin left the club. His successor Pini Gershon was able to bring Hapoel back to the championship finals after 1990, where Hapoel Tel Aviv was defeated in 1993 and Maccabi Tel Aviv could not win the championship for the first time since 1970. With Hapoel Galil Elyon, for the first time ever, a club of Israeli basketball champions who did not come from Tel Aviv became . While Katzurin was then committed by Maccabi Tel Aviv and returned to his hometown, Gershon Hapoel Galil Elyon also left, but returned after a season for the 1994/95 season, in which he again brought Hapoel into the championship final, which this time lost to Katzurin's Maccabi went. Gershon's successor at Hapoel was then his previous assistant David Blatt , who led the club to the cup final again in 1998.

Later Gershon also trained Maccabi Tel Aviv and brought Blatt again as his assistant. Together at Maccabi they celebrated successes on an international level and won the ULEB Euroleague twice , with Blatt moving to Russia in 2004 after the first success. Later, Oded Kattash started his coaching career at Hapoel from 2004 to 2007, who had also started his career at Hapoel as a young player before he switched to Maccabi Tel Aviv and later Panathinaikos Athens . Hapoel Galil Elyon not only had a reputation as a “stepping stone” for coaches, but also many young Israeli players such as Doron Sheffer , who ended his career at Hapoel in 2008, as well as professional beginners from the USA began successful careers with Galil Elyon. In 2008 the merger with Hapoel Gilboa finally followed.

Hapoel Gilboa

Hapoel Gilboa was overshadowed by its regional rival Galil Elyon in the north and already formed a merger with Hapoel Afula from 1993 to 2008 . After relegation from the top national league in 2008, the merger was dissolved and joined forces with Galil Elyon.

Hapoel Gilboa Galil (since 2008)

In 2008 the merger of Hapoel Galil Elyon and Hapoel Gilboa followed. The merger club then played its home games in the Gan Ner Sports Hall , which had a larger capacity than Galil Elyon's old home ground. Kattash then returned to the merger club as a coach. In 2010, the second year they won the Israeli championship. Then Kattash moved to Hapoel Jerusalem and was assistant coach of the Israeli national team . Kattash's successor at Gilboa Galil was assistant Lior Lubin , who led the team to the championship final again after a semi-final victory over Kattash's new club, which this time was lost again to Maccabi Tel Aviv, who successfully took revenge for the final defeat last year. In the following season 2011/12 they reached second place again in the regular season. In the play-offs for the championship this time, however, they were eliminated early in the quarter-finals. For this they won the Balkan International Basketball League (BIBL) as a visiting team , in which they beat the Bulgarian club Levski Sofia in the final in their own hall . The title could be defended in 2013 against the same opponent in the final in Samokow , Bulgaria . While Rakim Sanders and Jamar Smith then switched to German champion Brose Baskets , like Brian Roberts four years earlier , the team under the new coach Sharon Drucker lost the final against Levski Sofia in the BIBL in 2014 this time.
