Rakim Sanders (born July 8, 1989 in Pawtucket , Rhode Island ) is an American basketball player . After studying in his home country Sanders was in 2012 and was professional from Israeli champions Maccabi Tel Aviv obliged to but him to the national competitors Hapoel Gilboa Galil borrowed , with Sanders the Balkan League won, 2013. In the 2013/14 season, Sanders played for Brose Baskets in the German basketball league.

Career

After a difficult childhood in which Sanders lost his mother at the age of twelve, Sanders graduated from school in 2007 with the award of "Gatorade Player of the Year" for the state of Rhode Island. Among other things, this gave him the opportunity to receive a sports scholarship at Boston College , where he played for the Eagles' college team in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) from 2007 to 2010 . These had recently been quite successful under coach Al Skinner and had always qualified for the national NCAA finals from 2001 until 2003 . After failing to qualify in 2008, they lost in the first round in 2009 to Trojans from the University of Southern California . Tyrese Rice left after the end of his college career and became a professional, where he later played in the German basketball league . After a disappointing 2009/10 season, Skinner was fired and Sanders decided to move to Fairfield University in Connecticut , where Skinner's former assistant coach Ed Cooley coached the Stags college team and received the 2010 Ben Jobe Award. According to the regulations of the NCAA, the change of university meant a year off for Sanders from championship games of the NCAA. However, Cooley moved after five years for the Stags 2011 to Providence College and the Stags lost the championship finals of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) 2012 against the Greyhounds of Loyola University Maryland . With that they also missed a participation in the NCAA finals. After Sanders was not selected in the NBA Draft 2012 by any club of the highest endowed professional league NBA , he was still allowed to play in the NBA Summer League for the Golden State Warriors .

After Sanders did not get a contract for the regular season of the NBA with the Warriors, he was signed by the Israeli record champions Maccabi Tel Aviv . This decided, however, to loan Sanders to the league competitor in the national Ligat ha'Al Hapoel Gilboa Galil from Gan Ner . As a visiting team, Gilboa Galil took part again in the Balkan International Basketball League (BIBL), in which one could defend the title win of the previous year. Sanders was the top scorer of the game with 30 points in the 87:79 final victory over Levski Sofia and also achieved a double-double with 17 rebounds , which is why he was named MVP of the final tournament. In the national championship they eliminated as the main round seventh in the quarter-final play-off against the eventual title winner Maccabi Haifa . For the 2013/14 season, Sanders and his teammate Jamar Smith were signed by the German champions Brose Baskets from Bamberg for two years . In the ULEB Euroleague 2013/14 they just failed to reach the intermediate round in the highest European club competition and then dropped out early in the Eurocup 2013/14 . The third place in the Beko BBL Cup 2014 and the elimination in the first play-off round of the basketball Bundesliga 2013/14 meant a bitter disappointment for the previous series champion, which led to the dismissal of the coach and the resignation of the sports director. Then Sanders moved to Dinamo Basket in Sassari . With the club from Sardinia he won the double of the championship and the cup, where he himself was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the championship final series.
