Jamar Smith (born April 7, 1987 in Peoria , Illinois ) is an American basketball player . After studying in his home country, he started a professional career in 2010. After a year in the NBA Development League (D-League) and an engagement in Venezuela , he has been playing in FIBA Europe divisions since then . Smith won the Balkan League in 2012/13 with the Israeli club Hapoel Gilboa Galil . Smith has been playing for Limoges CSP in France since the 2014/14 season.

Career

Smith went to study at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), the largest university in his home state. There he played from 2005 for the university team Fighting Illinois in the Big Ten Conference of the NCAA Division I. After Deron Williams had become a professional in the NBA, the team could not defend the conference championship of the Big Ten from the previous year and reached the nationwide 2006 NCAA finals, the second round of losing to the University of Washington huskies . In his sophomore year as a sophomore , Smith struggled with ankle injuries before being involved in a car accident in February 2007 that seriously injured his teammate Brian Carlwell. The circumstances of the accident led to the dismissal of Smith from the roster of the Fightinglassung, who then continued his studies at the University of Southern Indiana , where he played for two years from 2008 for the college team Screaming Eagles in Division II of the NCAA. With the Eagles he reached the nationwide finals of Division II 2009, in which they were eliminated in the second round. In his senior year, Smith achieved just under 22 points per game and he was named an All-American as one of the best players in Division II .

Although his college years did not offer the best conditions for a professional career, Smith made the jump to the squad of the Maine Red Claws on the northeast coast of the United States in 2010, where he played in the D-League. In the farm team of NBA clubs, however, Smith could not recommend himself for a squad place in the most highly endowed professional league NBA . After he had played in Venezuela for the Guaiqueríes from Isla Margarita after the end of the season in the D-League , he therefore continued his career in Europe, where he played for the Czech club from Prostějov in the 2011/12 season. In the final series of the championship, the team lost for the third time in a row against the dominant series champion ČEZ Nymburk . Smith completed in the pre-season of the NBA 2012/13 again missions for the Boston Celtics , who had now taken over the farm team Red Claws alone. Two weeks before the start of the season, however, Smith was released from the Celtics, so he joined the Israeli club Hapoel Gilboa Galil from Gan Ner for the 2012/13 season, for which his former IIlini teammate Brian Randle had already played. Gilboa Galil played as a visiting team in the Balkan International Basketball League (BIBL), in which the title win from 2013 could be repeated. In the national championship of the Ligat ha'Al they lost as seventh-placed team in the quarter-final play-offs against the eventual title winner Maccabi Haifa .

For the 2013/14 season, Smith and his teammate Rakim Sanders were signed by the German champions Brose Baskets from Bamberg for two years . In the ULEB Euroleague 2013/14 they just failed to reach the intermediate round in the highest European club competition and then dropped out early in the Eurocup 2013/14 . The third place in the Beko BBL Cup 2014 and the elimination in the first play-off round of the basketball Bundesliga 2013/14 meant a bitter disappointment for the previous series champion, which led to the dismissal of the coach and the resignation of the sports director. After this season Smith moved to the French champions Limoges CSP .
