Samuel "Muli" Katzurin ( Hebrew מולי (שמואל) קצורין; * November 30, 1954 in Tel Aviv , Israel ) is an Israeli basketball coach who, in addition to two Israeli national championship titles with the series champion Maccabi from his hometown and championship titles in Poland and the Czech Republic, has also worked as a national coach in his home country and in Poland. Most recently he coached the German Bundesliga club Eisbären Bremerhaven until November 2015 .

career

Katzurin became a trainer at a young age and was initially assistant trainer at Hapoel Tel Aviv, Maccabi Ramat Gan and Beitar Tel Aviv between 1978 and 1982 . When he was just 28 years old, he became head coach at Maccabi South in his hometown, after two years he switched to the first division club Maccabi Ramat Gan. After several coaching positions, including five years at Hapoel Galil Elyon, he finally became the coach of the serial master Maccabi Tel Aviv in 1993, which that year for the first time since 1969 again won the championship in Israel against his long-standing club Hapoel Galil Elyon under the later Maccabi Coach legend Pini Gershon had missed. Katzurin ushered in a new series of successes of 14 consecutive championships until 2007 and even won the double of championship and cup with the team in 1994 , which was last successful in 1991. In 1995, however, he had to vacate the coaching chair from Maccabi and switched to cup winner Bnei from Herzliya .

In 1997 he became the national coach of Israel, from 1998 first as the club coach of Ironi Ramat Gan, then as the club coach of the Polish club Śląsk from Wroclaw . From the year 2000 he initially gave up another club coaching activity. In 2003 he finally achieved seventh place at the 2003 European Championships, the best final ranking with the Israeli national team under his aegis , which has not yet been achieved again. In the same year he was again a trainer at Śląsk, but the following year he even gave up both activities, initially to work as a television commentator in his home country.

It was not until 2006 that he resumed his coaching activity in Central Europe and became the coach of the top Czech club ČEZ Nymburk , which was four times Czech double winner with him. He was also able to surprisingly lead the Czech club team to the quarter-finals of the Eurocup 2009/10 . He was also the national coach of Poland from 2007 and coached the team at the 2009 European Championships , where the Polish association was the host. Poland missed the quarter-finals after defeating their neighbors from Lithuania and Bulgaria , trained by Pini Gershon, in the preliminary round . With ninth place, however, the best ranking for Poland since 1997 was achieved.

In 2010 he returned to Israel and became the sports director of the Israeli Federation. However, his duties as sports director did not meet his expectations. So he was pleased about the offer from Alba Berlin from the basketball league in January 2011 to be the successor of the released Luka Pavićević and to return to Central Europe. After the end of the 2010/2011 season it was announced that Katzurin would no longer train at Alba for the next season.

The Skyliners Frankfurt then trained in the Bundesliga from the 2011/2012 season until the end of the 2012/2013 season in April 2013 . His two-year contract was not renewed afterwards. During his time in Frankfurt, the team was in ninth place at the end of the 2011/12 season and 14th place in the table at the end of the 2012/13 season.

After a stopover in his home country and a coaching position at Bnei Hertzeliya, he was signed by the German Bundesliga club Eisbären Bremerhaven in early February 2015  . In November 2015, his position as head coach ended there after he had no success at the start of the 2015/16 season.
