Alon Stein ( Hebrew אלון שטיין; * January 4, 1978 in Hadera , Israel ) is a former Israeli basketball player who has also had German citizenship since 2000 . Stein played several seasons in the top two leagues of Israel, Germany and Switzerland . In 2011 he initially returned as a supplementary player to the Israeli series champion Maccabi Tel Aviv , who also plays a leading role in Europe and for whose youth teams Stein had previously been active. Since the 2013/14 season he replaced Derrick Sharp as assistant coach in the coaching staff of the successful men's team.

Career

Stein was considered a great talent in his youth and was able to score 60 points in a final of the Israeli youth championships as a 14-year-old. At the age of 17 he moved from the youth teams of Maccabi Tel Aviv to Hapoel Galil Elyon in Kfar Blum in northern Israel , where he was trained by the US coach David Blatt . After two years, his performance stagnated and when coach Blatt switched to Maccabi Tel Aviv, Stein was finally loaned out to the Israeli first division promoted Maccabi from Kirjat Motzkin in the 1999/2000 season. However, the team was relegated after a season and Stein initially returned to Hapoel Galil Elyon. After he hardly got any playing time under the new coach of Hapoel, however, he moved to Hapoel from Tel Aviv in the second national league, with which he returned to the first division at the end of the 2001/02 season.

For the 2002/03 season, Stein moved to Germany despite an ongoing contract with Hapoel, where he joined the then second division team ratiopharm Ulm. Here he was able to increase his personal performance again and scored a good 17 points and 4 assists per game. The first division return of the Ulm team was missed and Stein, who was again looking for higher tasks, left the club. In the 2003/04 season he got a contract with the Swiss first division club Geneva Devils. For the 2004/05 season he returned to the German 2nd division and this time played for the Eisbären from Bremerhaven in the group north. After only one defeat in the season, they rose to the first basketball league . After he was able to contribute a good 14 points and 7 assists on average in the second division in just under 34 minutes per game, his shares in the first division dropped to 12 minutes per game. After the newly promoted as a strong main round fourth in the 2005/06 season to the play-off was pulled semi-final, where the main round first, and later vice-champion Alba Berlin defeated, Stone left the club and played in the 2006/07 season, again at the Devils from Geneva in Switzerland. In the following season 2007/08 he was briefly active under the later Israeli national team coach Arik Shivek with the eventual champions ABC from Amsterdam in the Dutch FEB . Here he could not assert himself and returned to his home country.

During the 2007/08 season, Stein Hapoel from Kibbutz Be'eri on the edge of the Gaza Strip joined the Israeli second division. The season ended on a relegation zone and the class could only be held by the withdrawal of other teams. However, Stein moved to league rivals Elitzur from Jawne for the 2008/09 season. In 2010 he returned to Switzerland and played for the Tigers from Lugano , who became Swiss champions that year . But a contract extension failed and without a contract he was invited as a training player by his former coach David Blatt for the top European team Maccabi Tel Aviv during the 2010/11 season. For the following season 2011/12 he finally got a contract with Maccabi to be used as a supplementary player in national championship games. When Maccabi player icon Derrick Sharp resigned as an assistant coach and returned to his home country, Stein moved up to the 2013/14 season in the coaching staff of the first team. After defending their title in the national cup competition, they surprisingly won the ULEB Euroleague 2013/14 .
