Martin Phong Ni Watt Breunig (born February 18, 1992 in Leverkusen ) is a German basketball player on the position of wing and center player . He is 2.03 meters tall and is under contract with Bundesliga club EWE Baskets Oldenburg .

Player career

Breunig, son of a Thai mother and a German father, played soccer before he got into basketball. In the U14 division, he moved to the youth department of TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen . For his hometown club he played until 2010, among others alongside Mathis Mönninghoff , Tim Unterluggauer and Till-Joscha Jönke in the U19 Bundesliga NBBL . He decided to continue his career in the United States. In the 2010/11 season, Breunig was a member of the St. John's Northwestern Military Academy in Delafield ( Wisconsin ) and then moved to the University of Washington , where he studied and played from 2011 to 2013. Then he changed to the University of Montana and from the 2014/15 season slipped on the "Grizzlies" jersey after he was not allowed to be used in the 2013/14 season due to the NCAA change regulations.

While Breunig was a supplementary player at Washington, he was a huge hit at Montana and made a name for himself as a top performer. In his two years playing, the Leverkusen-based player scored more points for Montana than any other player in the "Grizzlies" in two years before him, was named the best player in his team in both seasons and was also named Team of the Year for Big Sky twice. With the end of the 2015/16 season, Breunig's university days in the USA ended, he embarked on a professional career and signed a two-year contract with Bundesliga club MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg in June 2016 . However, this contract was terminated after a year, Breunig moved within the league to the Telekom Baskets Bonn . In Bonn, Breunig developed into a regular player, in the 2019/20 season he impressed in 17 Bundesliga games with an average of 13.5 points and 4.6 rebounds per match.

In July 2020, Bundesliga club EWE Baskets Oldenburg secured the services of Breunig.

National team

Breunig played for the German U16 and U18 national team. With the U16 he won the B-EM in Sarajevo in 2008 , in 2010 he took part in the EM in Lithuania with the U18 selection .
