Emmetsburg is a small town (with the status " City ") and the administrative center of Palo Alto County in the US -amerikanischen State Iowa . Irish immigrants have been the main residents of the area since the county's inception. The place of today's city was first settled in 1858. The settlement was named after the rebel leader and nationalist Robert Emmet . The current city was built according to plan from 1974 with the construction of the railway. A year later the county seat was moved here. In 1877 the city was incorporated as an independent municipality. The Palo Alto County Courthouse , which is still in use today, was opened in 1880 . Every year, on the weekend following St. Patrick's Day, celebrations and a procession are held to commemorate Irish heritage.
