Loren Henry Meyer (born December 30, 1972 in Emmetsburg , Iowa ) is a retired American basketball player . After a short career in the most prestigious professional league NBA , Meyer ended his active career after a season in the British Basketball League (BBL), in which he was named " Most Valuable Player " (MVP) of the BBL 2000/01 season in 2001 after he had previously struggled with back problems.
Career
Meyer studied in his native state at Iowa State University , where he played for the college team Cyclones in the then Big Eight Conference of the NCAA from 1991 . In the statewide NCAA finals, the Cyclones were eliminated in the second round in 1992 and a year later in the first round. In his third NCAA season as "Junior" he was able to increase his personal statistics to over 22 points and 9.5 rebounds per game before he had to sit out in January 1994 after a car accident with a train for the rest of the season. The Cyclones had lost Meyer's teammate Chris Street in a fatal car accident a year earlier and then missed out on participation in the NCAA finals. Meyer came back for the following season, in which, in memory of his fatally injured teammate, his shirt number 40 wore, and with almost 16 points and nine rebounds per game, he was still able to put on convincing statistics and again only missed a " double-double " on average scarce. In the 1995 NCAA finals, the Cyclones lost in the second round against the later " Final Four " participant Tar Heels of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill .
In the 1995 NBA draft , Meyer was selected in the first round in 24th position by the Dallas Mavericks. In almost a third of the season's games, he acted as a member of the starting line-up and averaged five points with almost 18 minutes of playing time per game. In December 1996 he was given to the Phoenix Suns in a "blockbuster trade" together with his teammates Tony Dumas and " All-Star " Jason Kidd for the experienced Sam Cassell , AC Green and the later All-Star Michael Finley . After the end of the season, Meyer underwent a back operation, which made him suspend the entire 1997/98 season. The Suns released him from his contract in the summer of 1998 and Meyer got another contract from the Denver Nuggets in January 1999. With significantly reduced game proportions, he was used in 14 games an average of five minutes per game until the end of the season. After the Nuggets also released him from his contract in the summer of 1999, Meyer was initially not professionally active. For the 2000/01 season, Meyer then signed a contract in the closed professional league British Basketball League (BBL) with the Jets from Chester . In the rather insignificant sporting league, the Jets won the league cup BBL Trophy and moved into the play-offs with Meyer as " Most Valuable Player " (MVP) of the regular season , where they won the quarter-finals against the cup winner and later play-off title winner Leicester Riders defeated. Meyer then ended his active career as a professional basketball player.
