Alen Velčić

Alen Velčić (born October 6, 1970 in Villingen-Schwenningen ) is a former German basketball player and current coach of the Wiha Panthers Schwenningen in the 2nd Pro A basketball division .

career

Velčić grew up in Villingen-Schwenningen and played basketball at DJK Villingen before he went to Trier to study and booked stakes in the basketball league for TVG Trier , but was mostly on the field for Trier's second men's team.

As a trainer and manager, he set about promoting basketball in Schwenningen from 1995 onwards. He led the KGJ Schwenningen as a coach from the district league B (1997) to the first regional league (2004). He stayed in office until 2006.

In 2007 he was the manager of USC Freiburg , and in 2009 Velčić became a trainer at the CVJM Lörrach.

In March 2012, Velčić returned to the coaching position in Schwenningen, the team now played under the umbrella of BV Villingen-Schwenningen , which had taken over the playing rights of KGJ, and entered the 2nd regional league. In 2014 he led the team to return to the 1st regional league. In the 2016/17 season, Schwenningen won the championship title in the 1st Regionalliga South-West under Velčić's leadership, but was not given a license for the 2nd Bundesliga ProB . Velčić raised serious allegations against the management of the 2nd Bundesliga.

In the 2017/18 season, Velčić again won the championship title in the 1st Regionalliga South-West with the Schwenninger team. In the first year after promotion, he led Schwenningen as sixth in the table in the southern season in the championship round of the 2nd Bundesliga ProB and there in the semi-finals. Since runner-up Münster decided not to advance to the ProA, Velčić's team moved up to the ProA, and they were granted the right to play in May 2019.

The sporting upswing of the Schwenningen team, including the transition from the fifth-class 2nd regional league to the second-highest German division, as well as the development of the environment were attributed in particular to Velčić's work. He has been referred to as the “builder and architect of the Panthers project”. In addition to his coaching position, he became co-managing director of the operating company Basketball Villingen-Schwenningen GmbH .
