Nicholas Houghton, Baron Houghton of Richmond , GCB CBE ADC Gen (born October 18, 1954 in Otley , West Yorkshire ) is a former British general and was Chief of the Defense Staff of the British Armed Forces from 2013 to 2016 .

Life

Nicholas Houghton was born in Otley , West Yorkshire, in 1954 . After leaving school at the Woodhouse Grove School in Bradford , he attended the Military Academy Sandhurst and Peter's College of the University of Oxford . The general is married and has two grown children (a son and a daughter). He lives with his wife in Richmond , North Yorkshire .

Military career

From 2009 to 2013 he was deputy chairman of the defense staff. He was then appointed Chief of the Defense Staff , succeeding David Richards .

Houghton is one of the 89 people from the European Union against whom Russia imposed an entry ban in May 2015 . Houghton has been the constable of the tower since 2016 . In 2017 he was promoted to Life Peer as Baron Houghton of Richmond , of Richmond in the County of North Yorkshire, and has been a member of the House of Lords ever since .
