Patrick Terence Carney

Patrick Terence Carney (born July 21, 1985 ) is a retired American / Irish basketball player .

career

As a student, Carney played basketball at El Toro High School in Lake Forest in his native USA and then from 2003 to 2007 at university level at Chapman University in the city of Orange in the third division of the NCAA . For the Chapmans team he scored 1601 points in four years and at the time of his departure in 2007 he was in third place on the university team's list of all-time basket hunters.

As a professional basketball player, Carney was initially active in the 2nd regional league with the Velbert Baskets from the 2008/09 season. With the club, he made it to the 1st regional league in 2010. In 2011 Carney left Velbert and moved to the 2nd Bundesliga ProA at ETB Essen .

After a year in Essen, Carney was signed by Citybasket Recklinghausen and played for the club in the 2nd Bundesliga ProB in the 2012/13 season before returning to Essen and thus to the ProA. While in Recklinghausen he was one of the best basket shooters in the league with almost 20 points per game, he remained a supplementary player in Essen as in the 2011/12 season. Carney received Irish citizenship in July 2014.

In the 2014/15 season Carney strengthened FC Schalke 04 in the regional league, at the end of the season he moved to BC Winterthur in the second Swiss league. During the summer break in 2015 he was announced as a new addition to SSV Lokomotive Bernau (then Regionalliga), but the contract was terminated before the start of the season for family reasons, Carney returned to FC Schalke. With the "Royal Blues" he rose in spring 2016 as champion of the 1st Regionalliga West in the 2nd Bundesliga ProB. During the championship season he was named “Player of the Year” of the 1st Regionalliga West by the internet service eurobasket.com . In the 2017/18 season, Carney, who was given the position of team captain “on Schalke”, advanced to the ProB semi-finals with S04, which in retrospect meant promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga ProA, as Master Elchingen did not apply for a ProA license.

In the summer of 2019 Carney resigned as a professional player and became a full-time youth coach at FC Schalke. During the 2019/20 season, he also took on the role of assistant coach for Schalke's second division team.
