Chris Harris (basketball coach)

Christopher Robert Harris (born April 11, 1979 ) is a Canadian basketball coach and former professional basketball player. He is currently the head coach of the German second division team Phoenix Hagen .

Player career

Harris played at the University of Calgary until 2003 and then pursued a career as a professional basketball player. During his professional career he played in lower class leagues in Germany, mostly in the regional league. His stations were: GV Waltrop, BBV Hagen, Capone Düsseldorf and again BBV Hagen.

Coaching career

During his playing career, Harris worked as a coach in the youth field. Between 2005 and 2012 he worked as the youth coordinator of the BBV Hagen and temporarily also as a coach of the club's second and later the first men's team.

In 2010 he switched to FC Schalke 04 . There he took over the position of head coach of the men's team in the regional league. After two years in Gelsenkirchen, Harris accepted an offer from the Ratiopharm Academy Ulm, the youth department of the Bundesliga club Ratiopharm Ulm . As a full-time youth coach, he worked there as head coach of the second men's team and the U19 team in the youth basketball league .

In July 2014, the first division club Eisbären Bremerhaven signed him as an assistant coach. When the Eisbären dismissed head coach Muli Katzurin in November 2015 , Harris initially took over the post on an interim basis and was then promoted to head coach in January. On March 1, the club announced that Harris would return to his position as assistant coach with immediate effect and that Sebastian Machowski was hired as the new head coach. After the polar bears separated from Machowski in December 2017, Harris formed the coaching team with Arne Woltmann . At the end of November 2018, Harris moved to the second division Phoenix Hagen as head coach .

Personal

His cousin Whitney was also a professional basketball player and played in Germany.
