Stanislas Sorel

Louis-Amédée-Stanislas Sorel (* 1803 in Putanges , France , † March 18, 1871 in Paris , France) was a French engineer and inventor .

biography

The son of a watchmaker grew up with his brother Hippolyte-Francois-Xavier . Without any in-depth schooling, he entered his father's workshop. Sorel married at the age of 21 and had two children. In 1828 he went to Paris. There he got by with various works and attended scientific lectures. He also experimented in his spare time. On May 10, 1837, together with the industrialist Hector Ledru , he applied for a patent for an electroplating process, which was granted to him in 1838. With this process, steel parts could be cleaned and pretreated economically using a pickling technique . It was a forerunner of modern hot-dip galvanizing .

But Sorel made other inventions. So he designed the overpressure pipe for steam boilers and waterproof fabric. Furthermore a kind of solar light, a thermostatic control for bathroom heating systems and a small household stove. In 1842 Sorel published his book on galvanization with the title Galvanisation du fer, procédé Sorel, société H. Ledru et Cie, brevetés in the Galban publishing house .

In 1867 Sorel developed a new form of cement from a combination of magnesium oxide and magnesium chloride : Sorel cement , an acid-base cement, was used for grinding stones, tiles and artificial stones, among other things.

Honors

The Société d´Encoratement awarded him the gold medal for his electroplating process . He also received the Prix ​​Montyon twice . Sorel received the First Class Medal of Merit at the Paris World Exhibition in 1855 and was a Knight of the Legion of Honor. In honor of Sorel, the Sorel iron was named, one of the starting materials for Wootz , which is used as the starting steel , among other things, for the production of Damascus steel .
