Sorel iron is an iron - carbon - alloy having a very low content of sulfur , phosphorus , manganese , and other unwanted chemical elements having. The carbon content is around 3.9 to 4.7 percent.

Sorel iron is one of the starting materials for Wootz , which is used as the starting steel, among other things, for the production of Damascus steel .

The Sorel iron is named after the French engineer Stanislas Sorel (1803–1871), who discovered in 1836 how to economically clean and pretreat steel parts using a pickling technique . He thus created the basis for modern hot-dip galvanizing .
