Structure and origin
The community was created in 1965 from the previously independent communities Putanges and Pont-Écrepin . Putanges was the more important place and since the French Revolution the capital of the canton that still exists today . The community was first named Putange after the revolution . Pont-Écrepin was initially called Pontécrépin .
history
Putanges was built on a hill on the Orne in the 13th century. This is still called Vieux Putanges (Old Putanges) today. The old manor house, a chapel and a cemetery have been preserved from this period. The Putanges weekly market has existed since 1580. In 1756 a company was established that produced cannons for the navy. The construction of a lock made it possible to build a bridge over the Orne. The lock became a mill and from 1900 it was used to produce electricity. Pont-Écrepin was particularly influenced by the clothing industry. The name is derived from cuir , the French word for leather. The Putanges church was built in 1822, and that of Pont-Écrepin just two years later. The Mairie was built between 1902 and 1904 . Both places were largely destroyed by the Second World War . The bridge was blown up by the Wehrmacht on August 18, 1944 , and on the same day the British troops liberated Putanges and Pont-Écrepin. The entire reconstruction took around seven years.
With effect from January 1, 2016, the previous municipalities of Chênedouit , La Forêt-Auvray , La Fresnaye-au-Sauvage , Ménil-Jean , Putanges-Pont-Écrepin , Rabodanges , Les Rotours , Saint-Aubert-sur-Orne and Sainte- Croix-sur-Orne amalgamated to a Commune nouvelle with the name Putanges-le-Lac and have the status of a Commune déléguée in the new municipality . The administrative headquarters are in Putanges-Pont-Écrepin. The municipality belonged to the Arrondissement of Argentan and the canton of Athis-de-l'Orne . It was the seat of the municipal association Val d'Orne .
