Johannes Herber (born January 17, 1983 in Darmstadt , Hessen ) is a former German basketball player .

life and career

Johannes Herber was born as the son of Christiane and Joachim Herber. He attended the Bergstrasse school village , a cooperative comprehensive school .

Herber first played at SC Bergstrasse . From the end of 1996 he trained at the basketball part-time boarding school in Langen and switched to TV Langen . There he played until 2002, most recently in the 2nd basketball division . For the 2002/03 season Herber went to West Virginia University , where he played in the university team until 2006. In 2004 he and his team were among the last eight NCAA colleges, in 2005 they were among the last 16. During the semester break, he came to Germany to continue training at BTI Langen. He finished his studies in political science with a very good bachelor's degree . For this he received the Academic All-American of the Year award from ESPN magazine . Herber played a total of 128 games for West Virginia and was always in the starting line-up. He achieved averages of 8.4 points and 3.9 rebounds, and he prepared an average of 3.6 basket hits for his teammates per game.

Since 2001, Herber has played in several selection and youth teams of the German national basketball team . He finished tenth with the German junior team at the 2003 Summer Universiade in Daegu , and in 2005 he finished fifth with the German student selection in Izmir . With his performance, he was able to recommend himself for the A team.

When coach Dirk Bauermann made his comeback on July 30, 2004, Herber made his senior national team debut in a friendly against Estonia. But it wasn't until 2006 that he finally made it into the extended squad of the German team and took part in the 2006 World Basketball Championship in Japan together with Dirk Nowitzki and others . Herber got far more playing time than many experts had expected.

After the World Cup he was signed by ALBA Berlin until 2008. The contract with ALBA Berlin was originally extended to the end of the 2009/10 season, but should be terminated by mutual agreement after the 2008/09 season. Due to a renewed cruciate ligament tear , the termination of the contract was reversed. He played from February 2010 to July 2011 for the Walter Tigers Tübingen . His last club were the Fraport Skyliners Frankfurt . There he was in the squad until September 2012. During his time as a professional, he played a total of 120 Bundesliga games and 74 international matches.

In the course of the preparations for the 2012/13 season, Herber announced his retirement from active sport, as he saw no possibility of becoming 100% fit again due to several injuries. He reported on his personal situation after this resignation in the features section of the FAZ on February 8, 2013.
