The Walter AG is a German tool manufacturer for metal cutting . The company is a subsidiary of Sandvik Holding GmbH, which in turn belongs to the Swedish company Sandvik AB . The headquarters are in Tübingen, Baden-Württemberg .

history

The company was founded in 1919 in Düsseldorf under the name Walter Hartmetall GmbH by Richard Walter. In 1924, a small company in Tübingen was taken over, which later became the Walter Montanwerke . The headquarters moved to Tübingen in Baden-Württemberg. The company submitted its first patents in the hard metal sector in 1926. In 1953 the world's first fully automatic grinding machine was developed. Carbide indexable inserts have been produced since 1960 . In 1990 the company was converted into an AG. In 2004, the mechanical engineering division was sold to what was then “Körber Schleifring GmbH” (a company of Körber AG ), now Körber Solutions. As a result of a squeeze-out in 2005, Walter AG is 100% owned by Sandvik Holding GmbH.

Since January 2008, the brands of what were previously three companies have been united under the umbrella of Walter AG: Walter, Walter Titex and Walter Prototyp. In September 2010, the company introduced the new Walter Multiply brand. Together with the five competence brands Walter, Walter Titex, Walter Prototyp, Walter Valenite and Walter Multiply, Walter AG offers over 45,000 catalog tools. The product portfolio ranges from indexable inserts, solid carbide and HSS tools to PCD tool systems and complex actuating tools. This makes Walter AG a full-service provider in the machining industry and covers the machining areas of milling, turning, drilling and threading.

With the takeover of the software specialist Comara GmbH in 2017, Walter AG sees itself as one of the industry's leading providers of digitized process solutions.

On January 22, 2020, the company announced that it would be giving up its Frankfurt location. Around 200 employees are affected. The accusation against the company: Although business is going well, they want to relocate production to low-wage countries.
