Rescue Me is an American television series that was produced and broadcast from 2004 to 2011.

action

The main characters are firefighters from the New York City Fire Department . The series, which moves between drama and comedy with a lot of black humor , primarily focuses on their private life, sex life and often less sympathetic traits such as chauvinism , homophobia and so on. Although their personal and psychological problems are partly caused by the attacks of September 11, 2001 and further strokes of fate, they are classic antiheroes .

The main character is the fireman Tommy Gavin ( Denis Leary ). In addition to family problems, he struggles with alcoholism , drug addiction and hallucinations - in particular, he often has long conversations with his cousin, who died on September 11, 2001. In the course of the series, he also falls out more and more with his family.

season 1

In addition to the aftermath of September 11th, Tommy Gavin's family and alcohol problems are the main subjects of the series. He is also haunted again and again by the ghosts of fire victims and dead fire service colleagues and, above all, regularly by his cousin Jimmy, who also died as a firefighter on "9/11". His wife, Janet, lives separately from him with their children and plans to move to another state , which he tries in vain to prevent. He also begins a relationship with Sheila, the widow of his cousin Jimmy, who was killed on September 11, 2001, which triggers feelings of guilt and threatening hallucinations in him.

The commandant of the watch, Chief Jerry Riley , beats up a homosexual former firefighter in a bar and faces official consequences. Interestingly enough, he himself has a gay son who is a firefighter in Boston . Franco Rivera learns that he has a daughter with an ex-girlfriend; After the mother's death, he takes the child in, which leads to conflicts with the youth welfare office.

During the course of the series, Billy Warren is killed in an operation and is replaced by Laura Miles . The firefighters do not want a woman on their watch and make life difficult for her. But she still manages to some extent; over time she is more recognized, and she has affairs with two colleagues.

Tommy Gavin's mental state deteriorates noticeably. He makes a mistake during an operation, which injures Franco. Tommy can then be transferred to another guard.

season 2

Tommy works on a station on Staten Island , whose everyday life is described as boring and uneventful. At his old watch he is replaced by Sully . At first he is an exemplary firefighter and a popular colleague; however, when it happens by chance that he has a penchant for transvestism , he is bullied by his colleagues and leaves the station, whereupon Tommy returns.

Tommy and his brother Johnny Gavin , who works in the police force, find out they have an illegitimate brother who is a priest.

Chief Riley's wife is increasingly suffering from Alzheimer's disease and has to be taken to a care facility, for which he has to borrow money from his brother-in-law, who despises him. It is learned that Riley's son, who works as a firefighter in Boston, is gay; Jerry Riley is unable to accept that, an attempt at reconciliation fails, even if there is an rapprochement and Jerry at least tries to come to terms with it.

Lieutenant Kenneth "Lou" Shea , a relatively sensitive firefighter who tries to process his experiences around September 11th in poetry, is soon afterwards, when his long-term marriage has failed, by a con artist who has made him believe that he loves all of his life Brought savings.

Sheila miscarries; Tommy's father Michael Gavin returns from a vacation with a wealthy Asian wife who dies soon after, but leaves him only a small part of her fortune.

Laura Miles has big problems in her relationship with her colleague Franco, and this is mainly why she lets herself be transferred to another guard.

Tommy manages to get Janet to return. He even manages to get rid of his alcohol addiction. Together they move into a new apartment and try a fresh start. This fails when her son Connor is killed by a drunk driver in front of the apartment. Janet blames Tommy and leaves him. Tommy's uncle Teddy agrees to take revenge for Tommy and shoots the unlucky driver. Tommy, who first supported him, tried in vain at the last minute to prevent the act, because for some time even Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene appeared to him and tried to influence him and Jesus wanted to dissuade him from his plan of revenge.

season 3

Teddy is in jail for the manslaughter of the unlucky driver. Janet begins an affair with Tommy's brother, Johnny. Tommy reacts violently: he beats up his brother and rapes Janet. The corresponding scene caused considerable controversy among the audience; On the one hand, it is controversial whether it is a question of rape, on the other hand, whether the series approves or even glorifies such behavior.

Tommy's brother Johnny is shot dead on duty.

There is a scene in which Sheila drugged and raped Tommy.

Tommy moves in with Sheila. She tries to persuade him to give up his job, but fails. She drugged him again and set the house on fire. Whether Tommy will survive remains unclear at the end of the season.

Season 4

Tommy and Sheila survived after being rescued from the fire but are now faced with arson and insurance fraud lawsuits. Tommy was saved by a woman who now wants to get to know him better, but he keeps blocking her advances.

Janet has since given birth to the baby and their black hair suggests that Tommy and Janet may be Johnny's son. Because of this, Tommy has a crisis and in the meantime even fantasizes about killing the child. Sheila asks Tommy to give him the child if he doesn't want it and offers him money for it. Tommy agrees and hands the child over to Sheila. A fight for the baby then begins. Janet sends her youngest daughter Katy to Sheila on an excuse, but she kidnaps the baby back. Tommy then bribes his daughter Colleen, who has run away from home and lives with her boyfriend, to always give him the baby when she has it so that he can bring it to Sheila during this time. He gives Colleen a credit card that Colleen's friend uses to buy a wedding ring. When Tommy finds out, he confronts Colleen's boyfriend, who admits he bought the ring for another girl. The boyfriend does not tell Colleen the truth, but tells him that he is afraid of Tommy, which is why Colleen hates Tommy even more.

The fire station gets a new candidate ( Larenz Tate ) and calls him Black Shawn, since there is already a Sean in the station. Lou and Franco recruited him because he's a good basketball player and they are hoping to do better in the internal fire department competition. When Colleen tries to confront Tommy at the station, she meets Black Shawn and the two immediately get close. At the end of the season, the two can be seen having a picnic together.

Teddy is released from prison with the support of the "Mothers Against Drink-Driving". In prison, he married a woman whom he left as soon as he was released.

Chief Jerry Riley fails the firefighter fitness test and has to retire from active duty. He takes a desk job at headquarters and helps Tommy with his arson problems. After doing this favor, Jerry commits suicide in his bathroom.

The season ends with Tommy and his friends with Tommy and his father at his request to a minor league baseball game of the Newark Bears go. Lou explains to Sean Garrity that life is perfectly reflected in baseball. Life, like baseball, consists of a series of lengthy periods in which nothing happens and in which you get bored and therefore fall asleep at some point, and when the bat hits the ball and you wake up, you realize that you have missed the most important thing, because you dozed off. The last shot shows that Tommy's father did not doze off but died during the game.

Season 5

At the beginning of the fifth season, Tommy meets Janet's new friend Dwight ( Michael J. Fox ), who is in a wheelchair. Dwight tells him about his drinking problem and that he is also taking tranquilizers and stimulants, but Janet knows nothing about them. He also tells him that Tommy's daughter Katy is now attending boarding school and that he can no longer see her because of it. Tommy then swaps Dwight's tablets so that Janet learns the truth about Dwight when she finds him drunk on the sofa. When Tommy and Janet visit Katy at boarding school, they get closer again. Janet then offers him a sexual relationship.

Sheila's son Damien decides, like his father Jimmy, to become a firefighter on Tommy's watch. She asks Mike to take care of Damian, but Damian takes Damian on an assignment in which he is locked in a burning house. Tommy saves Damian and Sheila asks him to take on the role of his protector. In return, Sheila also offers him a sexual relationship. Damian graduates from the candidate school and starts on Tommy's watch.

The fire station receives a visit from the French journalist Geneviéve ( Karina Lombard ), who wants to write a book about September 11th and wants to conduct interviews for this purpose. Franco tells her that he is a fan of conspiracy theories . Lou tells her about his emotions and has feelings for them directly and also tells her about his poems. Tommy does not want to be interviewed at first, but appears very often in the stories of his colleagues, so that Geneviéve tries to convince him. She then takes him to an art exhibition and then seduces him when he brings her home; But Tommy wants to take it slow. A competition ensues between Lou and Tommy for the journalist. Tommy and Lou argue and Tommy tells Lou that he can't get a woman like Geneviéve. When Lou Geneviéve tells this, she sleeps with him. Geneviéve gives Lou and Tommy September 11 videotapes to watch. Tommy discovers Jimmy on the tapes and learns that Jimmy did not die in the first but in the second tower.

With the money he inherited from his mother, Sciletti opens a bar that he wants to run with his colleagues. Sean Garrity learns that he has a tumor in his kidney. In the hospital, he meets fellow fire brigade Ted, who is also suffering from cancer. He tells him that if he wants to keep his job, he has to keep quiet about his cancer treatment and finance his treatment himself. With the treatment costing $ 12,000, Garrity steals the proceeds from the bar. He survives the operation and is slowly able to return to work.

Candy, the prostitute who cheated on Lou in season two, reappears at the fire station and asks Lou for forgiveness. Lou forgives her and moves in with her. He marries her, but finds out that she has a false name and is wanted on an arrest warrant for fraud. He squandered the money on their joint account and confronted them.

Because of his conspiracy theories, Franco gets into trouble with his colleagues, especially Mike. He is photographed at a rally with conspiracy theorists. When the photo appeared on the Internet, firefighters from other guards came and confronted Franco.

Colleen is now dating Black Shawn. He confesses the relationship to Tommy after several attempts. Tommy and Janet pretend to be okay with the relationship but are against the relationship as Colleen and Shawn have decided not to have sex until marriage and Tommy and Janet are against their daughter's early wedding. They try to persuade Colleen and Shawn to have premarital sex and hope that it will complicate the relationship. The plan works at first as Shawn is shocked by the sexual experience Colleen is having. But the two get together again and Tommy accepts Shawn as his son-in-law.

During a fire, a woman named Kelly ( Maura Tierney ) appears who runs into a burning building to rescue a metal suitcase. She first flirts with Mike and Damian. To prevent Damian from starting a relationship with her, Tommy offers himself to her. He wants to find out what's in the suitcase and meets with Kelly. He tells of the death of his son and starts a loose relationship with her. In an argument, he forces her to show him the contents of the suitcase and learns that Kelly has also lost a child - her four-month-old daughter. When Tommy tells Lou this, Damian secretly overhears and tells Sheila about it. When she confronts Kelly, she doesn't want anything to do with Tommy because he told her secret.

Tommy becomes a sponsor of Derek at Alcoholics Anonymous , who keeps calling him. But he starts drinking again during the season and at the family-internal AA meeting, he persuades the others to drink again. They get drunk regularly at Mike's bar. One evening, Ellie ( Patti D'Arbanville ) drives home drunk to pick up her dog and has an accident in an accident. Uncle Teddy blames Tommy for this and confronts him in front of everyone in the bar. He shoots Tommy twice in the shoulder and leaves him on the floor to bleed to death while his friends watch him. He threatens to shoot anyone who wants to leave the bar.

Season 6

Tommy survives the gunshot wounds, but has a near-death experience. The former partner of his brother Johnny makes sure that no one is prosecuted for the events in the bar, but is now keeping an eye on the fire station so that they are threatened with closure. They also had to cede the bar to Tommy's cousin Eddie, who no longer lets anyone drink for free. Teddy threatens Tommy to shoot him again if he doesn't take his second chance.

Janet now lives with Tommy to protect the children from him. Their 21-year-old daughter Colleen becomes an alcoholic.
