action

At thirteen, Holly Grant had helped a boy take his little sister to see Santa at a mall. This Santa Claus also asked Holly what she would like and she just said: a friend for Christmas. Under the Christmas tree she found a snow globe with the inscription: The promised gift will come when true love shows itself in twenty years and two hearts are ready for it.

Twenty years later, Holly has become a romantic skeptic and is very focused on her career as a social worker. There she looks after two children, among other things, whose mother is struggling to regain custody. Now, just before Christmas, the children should at least be allowed to visit her over the holidays, but since the mother's lawyer, Ryan Hughes, is late and does not appear in court on time, the application is rejected and Holly has to return the deeply disappointed children take home with you. Holly is extremely angry about this and has her secretary write a letter to Hughes. To cheer up Holly, her friend Diane promises to send her a great Christmas present. Meanwhile, Ryan Hughes has tried to make up for his neglect and brings the children to their mother after he was able to convince the judge. Then he wants to get a Christmas tree and runs into Holly there. Shortly afterwards, they meet again at a Christmas party, where Ryan hides from the woman he actually finds quite attractive. Santa Claus has noticed this and gives Ryan a special assignment.

When a handsome man knocks on Holly's door with a Christmas tree on Christmas Day, she assumes it is a present from her friend Diane and invites him to her apartment. Ryan introduces herself as Douglas Firwood and since Holly has just broken up with her old boyfriend, she joins in the "fun". Douglas accompanies Holly to Christmas dinner with her parents, where her brother and his family are also with them. Her family likes Doug, and to protect herself from innuendos from her sister-in-law Carol, she tells everyone that they've both been together for a long time. Douglas plays the comedy and enjoys the day and the good food.

Holly is about to fall in love with Douglas and after finding the snow globe, she gradually believes that this old promise from Santa Claus is actually being fulfilled. Both spend the remaining days together and are overjoyed. Holly's old friend Ted hasn't given up hope of getting his girlfriend back, however. Holly learns from him on New Year's Eve that Douglas is actually a lawyer and that his name is Ryan Hughes. Holly then confronts Douglas and accuses him of lying to her. She asks him to go, which he immediately does. Santa Claus turns to Holly and gives her to understand that he had sent Ryan to her to fulfill her old Christmas wish as promised. Holly is confused and doesn't want to believe this, but she remembers that there have been signs of this old wish lately. Ted goes on the offensive again and publicly proposes marriage to Holly. But Holly refuses and follows Ryan because she has recognized through Santa that now is the time when two hearts are ready for love . Holly and Ryan meet again in a park, where they now remember meeting as children - at the age of 13 when Holly helped him bring his little sister to Santa Claus. Experience the fireworks of the new year arm in arm.
