The colors of autumn (original title: Local Color ) is an American film drama from 2006 , the art-aesthetic and philosophically existentialist, incidentally also political-historical topics based on the meeting of several weeks between a young man who wants to become a painter and an aging man Painter's illustration.

action

The young John Talia is passionate about painting. However, he is not interested in the abstract form of this art, as it is currently in fashion, but in the realistic, representational form. When one day he discovers a beautiful autumn painting, he really wants to get to know the painter. However, the owner of the painting warns him because the artist is known as curmudgeon. Only with great effort does he manage to gain access to the embittered old man. However, when Nicolai Seroff notices how much John is interested in soulful painting, the two start talking. In Seroff's opinion it is the task of art to give wings to the soul and because no one has been interested in that in recent years, he has given up painting and completely withdrawn. But John and his thirst for knowledge lead him to teach the young painter. He invites him to his summer house in Pennsylvania and, against his father's wishes, the boy sets off with Seroff. During the drive, John's thoughts are full of pictures and he enjoys the beauty of nature, which he hopes to be able to capture as perfectly as his teacher did during his active days.

John's interest leads Seroff to fully engage with the boy, after all he recognizes traits of himself in him. For John, however, the lessons turn out differently than expected. First he has to realize that Seroff only seems to be using it to carry out necessary renovations on and in the house. During this work, however, he met the young Carla, who began to interest him. Seroff notices this emotion in John and talks to him about his experiences with women in his life. In the evening Seroff expects his old friend Curtis Sunday with his wife and the whole evening the three talk about art and its importance for people, although the attitude of the two men is very different. In return, Seroff has to visit an exhibition that Sunday organized and that Seroff is supposed to enhance with his presence. However, Seroff is appalled by the alleged works of art and their creators. So when John asked if he could bring him anything else, he answered: "Matches and a bucket of gasoline". Seroff leaves the exhibition frustrated, which for him represents a real war between insanity and reason.

In contrast to this experience, John notices that Seroff was accompanying an art therapy for disabled children at a local special school. Watching him here was new to John. He saw a side of Seroff that he did not know yet. Funnily enough, he presents the naive pictures of these children on Sunday evening, who praises the works in the highest tones and thus exposes himself and his alleged artistic understanding.

John enjoys meeting Carla. He learns that her child had died in an accident and that Seroff had lost his wife very early on. These familiar loss experiences made them both kind of soulmates, which is why Carla visits so often. John's relationship with Seroff, on the other hand, is very tense. Instead of actively teaching him, he just takes the boy everywhere and when John tries a new picture he just criticizes it without really helping. Only Carla encourages him not to let himself go crazy. He shouldn't let anyone talk him out of doing what his heart tells him to do.

Seroff is enraged by the fact that John and Carla get along so well. He wants to send him home and in his wounded condition Seroff speaks to John for the first time about his wife, who was taken to a camp by the communists and killed. Ever since people had taken the most beautiful things from him, he had sworn that he would never become part of the ugliness that his wife had taken from him. Accordingly, he despaired of the current development of art and it was only John, with his talent and persistence to absolutely want to become a painter, that convinced him. The next morning he greets John with the words: Today we paint! And he begins to pass on all his knowledge about painting to him and to reveal many little secrets. John greedily absorbs everything and implements what he has learned in his pictures. Seroff thanks John at the end for the time he was with him. Through him he would have discovered something that he thought was lost.

John leaves Carla a farewell letter and drives home alone in Seroff's car. Distraught, he realizes that when he returns Seroff is already there and is talking animatedly to John's father, even though the two allegedly didn't like each other. John notes with satisfaction that through him, Seroff has found the joy of painting again. However, he dies next spring and John looks back gratefully on the time with his teacher.

reception

Reviews

The WDR considered the film drama to be “word-heavy” , although presented “sensitively and warmly” . According to kino.de, Armin Mueller-Stahl played his fellow actors "with a gentle smile on the wall." Mueller-Stahl received consistently positive reviews for his performance. But also Ron Perlman and Ray Liotta "round off the total work of art" .

Kino.de called the film: "A thoughtful and convincing drama about the approach and friendship between a young artist and an old, life-weary master."

Fernsehserien.de assessed: “The director George Gallo, who is known for action films, amazes this time with a not at all thick observation of a friendship between men. [...] The cast turned out to be a stroke of luck: When Armin Mueller-Stahl, as a contentious painter, polemicizes against the arbitrariness of abstract art, his words start to shine from within. [...] As a docile student, teen star Trevor Morgan convincingly shows that art is beautiful, but it is a lot of work. "

Gross profit

Despite the positive reviews, the film turned out to be a financial flop, with global box office revenues of 32,788 US dollars compared to the budget. On the opening weekend, the film was only shown in one theater and grossed $ 7,183.

Awards

The Fall Colors was presented at the 2006 Ft. Lauderdale International Film Festival honored with three awards. One jury award each went to George Gallo and Michael Negrin. Trevor Morgan received the President Award in the Star on the Horizon category .
