Near and Middle East Association

The Nah- und Mittelost-Verein eV (NUMOV) is an association of German companies active in the Near and Middle East founded in 1934 to represent the trade and investment interests of the German economy in the countries of this region.

The association is based in Berlin and has representative offices in around ten German cities. NUMOV is the publisher of the largest German Near and Middle East business magazine "Economic Forum Near and Middle East" and country-specific specialist magazines. The former Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder is the honorary chairman .

history

According to its own information, the association is the oldest German interest group promoting economic relationships in the Near and Middle East . It was founded as the German Orient Association on May 30, 1934 in Berlin and elected Siemens' director Hermann Reyss as its first chairman. With IG Farben , Allianz , Dresdner Bank , Deutsche Bank , Krupp , MAN , Julius Berger and Hochtief , other large German corporations sent representatives to the NUMOV board.

From 1998 to 2005 Hans-Jürgen Wischnewski was Honorary Chairman of NUMOV.

Gerhard Schröder's trips to Iran in 2009 and 2016

In his function as NUMOV honorary chairman, Gerhard Schröder traveled to the Islamic Republic of Iran and met a. together with the then Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad , Ali Larijani and Ayatollah Ali Khamene'i . Schröder's non-public meeting with the Iranian President in particular met with criticism.

In January 2016, Schröder again traveled to Iran as honorary chairman of the Near and Middle East Association at the head of a high-ranking business delegation. He met with the acting President Rohani together, also with the Expediency svorsitzenden and former President Rafsanjani , head of the Security Schamchani and the Iranian Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif .

German Orient Foundation

The establishment of the German Orient Foundation goes back from the association , under which the German Orient Institute has been working since 1960 with the aim of intensifying relations in the cultural and scientific fields. It was financed in equal parts by the City of Hamburg and the Foreign Office.
