Achim Post (born May 2, 1959 in Rahden ) is a German politician ( SPD ). From 2002 to 2012 he was deputy federal manager of the SPD and has been general secretary of the Social Democratic Party of Europe (SPE) since 2012 . He has been a member of the German Bundestag since 2013 and has been deputy chairman of the SPD parliamentary group since 2017 .

Life

Post grew up in Espelkamp , where he passed his Abitur at the Söderblom-Gymnasium in 1978 . After his community service , he began studying sociology with a focus on public administration at Bielefeld University in 1980 , which he graduated with a diploma in 1986 . From 1986 to 1990 he worked as a research assistant for the members of the Bundestag Hans-Jürgen Wischnewski , Kurt Vogelsang and Dieter Heistermann and from 1990 to 1999 he was a speaker, office manager and managing director of the SPD group in the European Parliament . Post is Protestant, married, has two children and lives in Berlin. His brother is the film director Dietmar Post .

Political party

He describes Willy Brandt as formative. Because of him, he joined the SPD in 1976. From 1999 to 2013 he headed the international politics department of the SPD party executive and from 2002 to 2012 he was deputy federal manager of the SPD. In the 2009 Bundestag election he ran as a direct candidate in the Minden-Lübbecke I constituency , but was defeated by the CDU candidate Steffen Kampeter . Kampeter succeeded Lothar Ibrügger , who had represented the constituency for the SPD until 2009. At the beginning of October 2012, Post was elected Secretary General of the Party of European Socialists (PES). In the 2013 federal election , Post ran again as a direct candidate in the Minden-Lübbecke I constituency. He lost the constituency to Steffen Kampeter, but moved into the Bundestag via the state list. On September 23, 2015, Post was elected chairman of the NRW regional group in the SPD parliamentary group. In the 2017 Bundestag election , he won the direct mandate in the Minden-Lübbecke I constituency. On December 5, 2017, Post was elected deputy chairman of the SPD parliamentary group for the areas of Europe, budget and finance.

Extra income

At the beginning of 2014, Post appeared on the list of members of the Bundestag with the highest additional income in eleventh place. According to information from Ab altenwatch.de, Post earned 75,000 euros in addition to his work in parliament and was thus the best-earning MP from the ranks of the SPD parliamentary group. The reason was his activity as General Secretary of the Party of European Socialists. Since October 2014, Swiss Post has been doing the job free of charge.
